Possibly one of the greatest gifts I have ever received!

I think that this is really the underlying theme of this book. You MUST help yourself by following certain, specific steps and activities, however, by doing so, you may become successful beyond your dreams.

Simply speaking, what are these steps... stop being all about yourself. Think of others first. Help people, connect people, be there for people. Do the small, simple things for them that they may not even realize means a lot to them. Things like handwritten notes are a HUGE deal.

I can personally tell you that by reading this book and following the plan laid out within its pages, I have become so busy that I have hired an assistant and opened an office. I didn't get the book until December of 2011. The impact has been dramatic, drastic and immediate!

We are all in sales, whether we like it or not. Even the person who sits behind a desk and crunches numbers will eventually have to sell something or someone. By creating these relationships, you can make a huge impact on a person's life... and even your own!

The book was a gift for me, but I liked it so much I purchased a couple copies through AMAZON as gifts for others.

7L is the ultimate book for small business owners

Michael has written the finest book there is about the importance of building real relationships to help each other's small businesses grow. It has taken me 10 years to finally figure out the value of one on one relationships versus trying to mass market. Michael provides an easy to follow step by step system to create long lasting relationships with our clients and vendors that result in an endless supply of referrals. This book has completely changed how I do business in real estate and I am eternally grateful for knowing Michael and getting this book. I went out and bought 30 of them so that I can give them to my associates.

Before I read The Seven Levels of Communication, I was generating hundreds of online leads a month for my real estate business and working my tail off trying to convert those strangers into clients. Newsflash, chasing strangers is exhausting! Then a friend mailed me the book and encouraged me to read it. After reading the Seven Levels, I realized how much I was neglecting my Sphere of Influence and having referral systems in place. I shut down the internet leads, opened up communications with my Sphere, and within 90 days, had my database cleaned up, on a communication plan, and for the first time, I was ATTRACTING business rather than chasing it! I recommend this book to anyone serious about building a business that serves them, and ask people, can you afford NOT to have your database working FOR you?

Gr 6 Up-A strong and complete biography of the famous Confederate general. Robertson's detailed portrait of his subject's youth reveals the many experiences that shaped the man. But the emphasis, of course, is on Jackson's life and work during the Civil War, and it is here that the book's strengths and weaknesses are most apparent. The author uses copious primary sources, smoothly integrating accounts from Jackson's soldiers, superiors, and family members, and from the many letters he wrote home to his wife describing the progression of the war. While clearly a fan, Robertson does not shrink from pointing out Jackson's failings, offering historically sound explanations for the man's actions and a clear account of how he acquired his famous nickname. The black-and-white photographs and reproductions are well selected and well placed throughout. Unfortunately, at about midpoint, the thoroughness approaches textbooklike monotony, limiting the book's appeal to young readers, who may also be confused by the constant interchange of the terms "Union," "Federal," and "Yankee." The lack of keys for the maps and battle diagrams is a great disappointment, rendering them practically moot for student purposes. However, the perennial Civil War and biography assignments and the topic's draw for Civil War buffs should secure the book circulation.

Jackson gained experience in the Mexican War, and after leaving the military, he taught at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington. Jackson is best known today as a beloved Confederate general. Robertson finds a good balance between Jackson's life before that war and his experiences in the campaigns that made him famous. Readers will get to know him as a man and then watch him in action during the pivotal years from the beginning of the war in 1861 until his death in 1863. The many illustrations include reproductions of period photographs and prints as well as several maps and photos of artifacts. Robertson's extensive source notes and a bibliography are appended. About the Author
James I. Robertson Jr. teaches the largest Civil War history course in the nation and is the recipient of every major award given in the field of Civil War history. His latest book, Stonewall Jackson: The Man, The Soldier, The Legend, has won an unprecedented eight awards in national competition. A native of Danville, Virginia, Dr. Robertson received a B.A. from Randolph-Macon College and an M.A. and a Ph.D. from Emory University. He is currently the Alumni Distinguished Professor and Executive Director of the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, where he lives.

"Be good, or Stonewall Jackson will get you".

This, according to a very enjoyable biography by James Robertson, is how Union mothers in the years of the Civil War tried to convince their unruly children to behave. It is one of many fascinating stories in the incredible life and military career of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.

I have always heard Jackson described as "Lee's right hand" and "the Confederacy's greatest general". I have never studied exactly how he came to gain this reputation, nor considered how much it was deserved. While I was reading this book, I came across a military history magazine with the cover story (I think this is how they phrased it) "How Strange WAS Stonewall Jackson?" After finishing this biography, I'd have to say "pretty darn strange". He was a man of mediocre intellect but exceptional drive. He had a religious faith of childlike simplicity to which he was entirely devoted, and which left him utterly convinced that he was called to military service. He behaved with reckless courage in many battles, in part because he seems to have found it inconceivable that God would let him be injured. He fought for the South, and believed slavery was part of God's plan, but he was a devoted teacher of religion and literacy to slaves in his home church. He drove his men on such fast forced marches that they took to calling themselves "foot cavalry", yet they loved him like a father. He was a stern disciplinarian with students a Virginia Military Institute, yet a pushover with young children. The contradictions continue for most of the book.

I struggled to decide how to rate this. I think the reader most apt to enjoy this would be one with an interest in history , but enough unfamiliarity with the details of the key Civil War battles that this would not seem redundant. I think a avid fan of such histories would still get enough out of this to find it worthwhile. I think that a reader not in those two categories might be somewhat put off by Jackson's strangeness, but would still be rewarded with a fast-paced look at the details of a great American's life. I give it four stars, and I'd go to 4 and 1/2 if I could.

A well-written history of an American Icon for middle-schoolers

This delightful book is written more for middle schoolers than anyone else. It is a short, concise history of General Jackson and I highly recommend it. It is easy to read and is a good resource for student papers. Stonewall Jackson is an American icon and his exemplary life serves as a guidepost for every U.S. citizen.

IN all the forty years of praying, of which only a partial record could be kept, there was no topic more satisfactory than the experience of such a large company in praying for money. There was no prearranged plan of procedure and no speculative purpose to obtain the help of God in the accumulation of property. But for some reason, which is not now recalled, there was given out for an evening's meditation the topic, "Shall we pray for money?" There was a strong division of opinion, some asserting that we are not authorized to pray for anything but for the Holy Spirit. Others asserted with complete confidence that prayer should be made for anything which we felt we needed. The majority appeared to be assured that men must work and seek only "the kingdom of God," and that they should believe that all other things would be given from God as we should have need. Fortunately or providentially the men and women who held to the theory that God commands his disciples to pray for money determined to put the matter to a fair test. They were led by a consecrated deacon, at whose house they held the weekly meetings. They did not ask the Lord for money at first, but prayed daily for instruction on the important question whether it was a duty, or was permissible, for men to pray for success in their secular business. There were four men and several business women whose experience was especially valuable. One of them was the owner or partner in a bookbindery. The company of believers devoted an entire evening to prayer for the prosperity of his business. They agreed, further, to pray for that one thing in unison at twelve o'clock each day for one week. The conditions were especially for observation, as the owner of the business was a devout, unselfish Christian who had determined, years before, to give a tenth of all his income to the Lord's work, and he stood willing to give his all if any good cause demanded such a sacrifice.

Russell Herman Conwell (February 15, 1843 – December 6, 1925) was an American Baptist minister, orator, philanthropist, lawyer, and writer. He is best remembered as the founder and first president of Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as the Pastor of The Baptist Temple, and for his inspirational lecture, Acres of Diamonds. He was born in South Worthington, Massachusetts, and was buried in the Founder's Garden at Temple University.

Excellent book on Fairies and Elves

This book superbly describes the other world that exists among us but remains hidden from most people. If you are interested in lore and the land of the Fey, this book will fill in many gaps of knowledge and answer many of your questions about how the fairies live, work and play, and what they have to teach us.

Truth into one great whole.

If you are curious about the link between Christianity and the Fairy Faith of the Celts, this is the one book you must read. Written by a pastor of the middle ages, who also happens to meet the requirements of a scottish seer, Kirk tells things you probably will never read anywhere else!

I find this book to be filled with truth, at least as it was.

Although I knew this was a book that can be found in the public domain, nowhere in the description of this 'book' is it mentioned it is really a link to a website, Sacred Texts. I was expecting a version made for an ereader, that's what I thought I was paying for. Selling a repackaged public domain work is one thing, selling a link is a rip off.

About the Author

Ivan Bunin (1870–1953) was the first Russian writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Dark Avenues, his last book of fiction, is arguably the most widely read 20th-century collection of short stories in Russia. Hugh Aplin is head of Russian at Westminster School and has translated a number of Russian classics, including Chekhov's The Story of a Nobody and Three Years and Dostoyevsky's The Double, The Eternal Husband, and Poor People.

A Russian de Maupassant

As the artist in `Galya Ganskaya' states, `I spent two springs in Paris, imagined myself to be a second Maupassant when matters of love were concerned.' While Ivan Bunin's themes in this bundle of short stories are largely the same as those of de Maupassant, their treatment is different.

Amorous encounters
Ivan Bunin's dark avenues of carnal love are mostly a combination of short amorous/carnal encounters/one night stands (Loyka and Valeria, Styopa, The Simpleton, A Visitor, The Beginning, Calling Cards, A Riverside Inn, Heinrich, Vengeance, Galina Ganskaya, Upon a Long-Familiar Street, The Oaklings, Antigone, Pure Monday) or pure `paid intercourses' (Miss Klara, Madrid, The Steamer Saratov) .
Other themes are reminiscences of former loves and lovers (A Late Hour, Rusya, Dark Avenues), a love triangle (Caucasus), the fate of a son from a former marriage (A Beauty), adolescent love (Natalie) and `animal' stories (Iron Coat, Wolves).
`The Raven' is a variant of `First Love' by Ivan Turgenev, while war (the only socio-political issue in this bundle) lays at the heart of `A Cold Autumn'.
These stories shine through their unexpected U-turns (sexual and relational) with sudden surrenders and abrupt endings.

Women and Men
In Bunin's stories women are more emotionally involved than men. As a former beloved woman says in `Dark Avenues: `Youth passes for everyone but love is a different matter.' They can also be inconsistent (Mura), but are mostly victims (and certainly if they are maids) of irresponsible male behavior.
While some men feel `secret wounds', because they have been abandoned by their wife (In Paris), torn away from a girlfriend (Rusya) or experienced a dying love (A Late Hour), most of them flee away from their responsibility like thieves in the night after having satisfied their sexual drive or after taking brutal revenge.

Bunin and de Maupassant
The stories of both authors cover mainly the same social background of the bourgeoisie and the upper classes. But, while de Maupassant criticizes directly and severely their hypocrisy, Bunin's stories don't have the aim to transcend the level of pure individual emotional feelings.
Technically, de Maupassant's stories are rough diamonds, while those of Bunin are polished gems.

The stories of both authors should not be missed.

Uneven but occasionally brilliant short stories on sex and death

I am somewhat ambivalent about this collection of short stories. The theme is, without a doubt, the link between sex and death. When I started reading the collection, it was as if I was hearing the lowest note on the piano. Then in the next story I heard it again. "That's interesting," I thought. Then it came again. And again. "Enough already," I thought. I mean, yes, there is a connection between sex and death, but at the same time there's also a connection between sex and life and between not having sex and death.

The worst stories are those in which a woman is abused in some way and then falls in love with her tormentor and lives a life of sacrifice for no apparent reason. However, there are also truly great stories, like "In Paris" or "Pure Monday", which have very real and likable female characters that have complex feelings and are capable of love that is believable and moving.

The collection includes the Russian original of the title story, "Dark Avenues," which is about a nobleman who meets the former serf girl he used to love. In English it didn't move me much. In Russian, though, it was clear how much he was influenced by Pushkin. Also, the Russian dialogue is far more expressive, because it shows that she still referred to him formally, while he spoke to her informally, thus highlighting the social gap between them. The story was written in 1938 and I couldn't help but feel all the archaic vocabulary was at least partly an attempt to make the present go away, if only for the space of the story. The theme of nobleman mistreating a lower class girl, which is in this story and others, has links to the Russian Revolution. It's almost as if Bunin was writing these stories in a mood of both celebration and repentance.

There is a very useful short biography of Bunin at the end that puts his work in a larger context, as well as a list of further reading. Foreign words and terms are glossed in helpful footnotes.

As an introduction to Bunin's stories, I'd recommend the Northwestern University Press volume, Night of Denial. However, reading this collection is an excellent way to get a deeper sense of the themes of the collection as a whole.
