Trusting Rio

I enjoyed the first book in this series, Asher's Mates. A Fey (Kat) is imprisoned and is rescued by his mate Asher, a blind wolf shifter. Fleeing and seeking sanctuary they head to a coven led by an ancient vampire, Ian. The three are mates and they uncover a conspiracy in the paranormal world and Cameron, someone close to them, is taken.

So this story, Trusting Rio, is a continuation of the characters in the first story. Cameron, a jaguar shifter, is still missing. Rio (Vampire) is doing everything he can to find him and in the midst of searching, a dream walker, Rio's mate Cass, appears. He helps with the search but he has his own limitations.

There's a larger cast of characters in this book and it took me awhile to reacquaint myself. Along with the background came a few misplaced words, two that I caught. Once Ian and Cass start interacting in person the story picked up.

Who knows how long Cass was imprisoned, seeking relief by escaping in astral form. His past is one where he's been taken advantage of and his trust and powers were abused. In short, his outlook on life is tainted, his family gone, and he only has himself to rely on. He wakes up from his rescue scared, distrustful, and can't think why mating will make his life any different. For such a powerful magic user, Cass is insecure. He withheld his concerns and needs from Rio and hides his true nature of being a submissive. Cass wasn't quite a wimpy clingy whiner but it was close at times.

Rio is a five hundred year old vampire, Ian's son. Of course he is an alpha in every sense of the word. He wants control in the bedroom and he loves to explore bondage games with his mate. Thankfully his alpha tendencies are balanced by his caring. The title Trusting Rio is just that - Giving heart, body, and soul into a mate's care and that is done thru trust and love.

SPOILER - Don't read unless you read the book -

The ending: So a soul is bound and it didn't die when the body does. The soul is connected to Rio and he grounds it within himself with his own soul. Okay. So when the mystical magical connect happens somehow Cass is able to astral project a physical body to where he can talk and physically interact with Rio and anyone else. Yet he died and his soul is housed with his magic in Rio. That is what I got out of it, who knows if my imagination led me in the right direction. It still doesn't make sense. I'd expect a ghost type being.

SPOILER OVER

I'll give this 3.5 stars because of some minor editing, choppy in the beginning with background information pouring out and disrupting the flow, and that ending that didn't sit right. And the odd thing is, throughout the story those around Rio are distrustful of Cass. They never opened up completely and accepted him. They were always a bit suspicious. So the ending should have had some acceptance of having Cass in their lives. It needed to happen, the clan and forming pack needed closure to Rio's suffering and a step towards healing. - Dan's Wife

Paul Westwood was born in 1953 and is one of the world's most famous bass players as well as being one of London's elite session musicians. His album credits include such artists as Elton John, Vangelis, John Miles, Stephen Bishop, Andy Williams, Jos� Carreras, Hot Chocolate, Madonna, Jennifer Rush and The Royal Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestras. He has toured with Charles Aznavour, John Dankenworth and Cleo Laine, and Cliff Richard and has worked with many jazz musicians including Steve Gadd, Wayne Shorter, Joe Beck and Jon Hiseman. Paul teaches at the Royal Academy of Music, London; King's College, London; and others.

great for beginner/intermediate player

I'm an amateur, self-taught player. Not an absolute beginner, but not very skilled either.

This book was perfect for me - it covers techniques in a way I could understand easily. And it covers lots of different styles of music - so it's helpful for musicians who only know one kind (e.g., if you are a metal head who wants to broaden your playing).

Also, the author does not try to sound cool or condescending. He just covers what you need to know in a way that shows he loves music.

Better than the other introductory books I've seen. I'm not a music teacher, but it seems to me this would be a great accompaniment to lessons after someone has been playing for a few weeks.

I read music only a little, and on a plus side, I do I think listening to the CDs and following the written music is helpful, and I like how the author goes into all kinds of music from all over the world... but the CDs just have short snippets of bass parts and while I guess you could keep clicking the back button on the CD player to repeat the parts over and over... I think the CDs would have been more helpful if the snippets were longer, and/ or if there were versions of music without the bass part so the bass student could play along.
The book and CD just weren't what I expected from reading the Amazon review.
It seems you could learn as much by listening to and playing along with the local college radio / world music/ various CDs you already have/ being in a band/learning covers... gee, I should follow my own advice here!
I will go over it again and update if my opinion changes.

i have just started reading this book and i'm already learning something. the quality of the recordings on the CD's is top notch and the font size is great(i only wish the book was spiral-bound). thank you Mr. Westwood for an invaluable source of inspiration. :)

About the Author

Massimo Bottura is the chef patron of Osteria Francescana, a three Michelin star restaurant based in Modena, Italy. Massimo grew up in Modena and developed an interest in cooking from a young age after watching his mother, grandmother and aunt in the kitchen preparing family meals. In 1986 he left a law degree to open his first restaurant and subsequently went on to develop his love of food with stages for Alain Ducasse at Louis XV in Monte Carlo and Ferran Adri� at elbulli. He opened Osteria Francescana in 1995.

The bread was by far the best I've ever tasted

First I must say after 15 years as a professional chef and having read hundreds of books, THIS is one that is so fascinating I had to write my first review. I had the experience of eating this man's food last summer at his restaurant in Modena. The bread was by far the best I've ever tasted, far better than even chef Joel Robuchon's which speaks volumes. Moving into dinner, I was not prepared for the meal to come. Some courses were revolutionary, life changing really. Others were confusing and left me questioning the chef's motives. If I had only read this book first I am certain it would have been a different experience. That's what this book does. It goes into detail, the conceptualizing and philosophy being every dish. I've never read a book that is all about the ideology first with the recipes to follow. It's an exceptionally refreshing way to read a cookbook. I've relished having something like this. To look at how this man goes about the creative process. I'll admit, at first I sceptical. Could he really have taken all of these inspirations to create these dishes? Or, did he simply dig for stories to support their creation. I believe the first. You either believe in Massimo completely or simply not at all. That being said, yes these recipes are extrodinarlily creative and some call for devices such as a rotary evaporator, etc. Not to mention the ingredients indigenous to his homeland of Modena Italy he is able to procure. He was doing so many things that later began trending in NYC and the rest of the world. Simply put, if you're interested in how an artistic chef goes about creating dishes, look no further. Thank you Massimo for your work! To all you chef's out there, BUY THIS BOOK!

One of the most poetic cookbooks I have ever read ...

One of the most poetic cookbooks I have ever read. Bottura narrates the creation of his recipes through reflecting on literature and contemporary art. The recipes included may well have a Michelin 3 star difficulty to execute at home, especially in recreating the visual presentation. Nevertheless, it is vivid and touching- a satisfying read for anyone who wishes to understand the contemporary Italian gastronomy. Time flew by as I first tried to read the book while sitting on the floor of the Strand bookstore in New York. Whether or not to make the dishes at home, I would have it on my shelf nevertheless.

Never Judge a book by it's cover

I am currently in Engineering at the University of Waterloo, and forced to take a C++ course. I was nervous at first, but the cover of this book helped me a little. The cover is kind of cheasy, but the cover holds the best written programming book I have ever read. The ideas are simplified and analogies used wisely. The questions were even good enough for the teacher to give on the assignments! If you are learning C++, or want to refresh then this book is a MUST!

It's alright...

This is a very academic book. So beware.
We used it in our C++ course which followed along with fine. The teacher kept the pace going by doing his own created examples and lab assignments and towards the end the pace heated up a bit as we went on to OOP, which in the book is a bit weak, so you had to basically take full-on notes.
What the book does is basically set out the structures in C++ over a series of long explanations. I'd say it waffles on a lot but that's the nature of a lot of academic books regardless of subject.
It's better explained as a good read from cover to cover but not as a stop and go source of reference. If your angle is more "teach yourself" go for one of the wrox or o'reilly titles.
If you're completely new to programming there are easier languages to learn first. C++ is a bit of a sledgehammer because it is hardcore.

A series you really need!

I would like to strongly recommend you to buy the 52 topical sermons (vol. 1) written again by Barry Davis. You will find in it thorough biblical material, well arranged, easy to follow, let alone very affordable as for its price.
