This book is excellent reading. Foremost, it discusses clearly all of the major issues today in corporate finance - capital structure, "what investors want", incentives and performance measurement via Accounting versus Economic Value Added models, corporate architecture, etc. The author is extremely engaging, and I must admit, this is the first "text book" I've had that I wanted to keep reading. The author is sarcastic, opinionated, but objective all in one. An excellent purchase for a course or just if you're interested in understanding the way markets and corporate finance truly function.

A good book of ARTICLES but too academic.

Chew's New Corporate Finance is a quite decent book on journal articles on finance issues from a corporate standpoint. Other than your professor's own choice of favourite articles, Chew's may be the next best thing you can get. I won't give it a higher rating (4 or 5 star) because it lacks ground-breaking yet still easy-to-read articles from the less technical journals like Harvard Business Review, etc.
Most of the articles are too academic coming from more or less the same journals. Moreover, the more technical ones have difficult formulas and number-crunching statistics which are more appropriate for MBA and MSc in Finance students, or those in researchers in "high-level derivative work".
I have the second edition (1999) of this book and used it sparingly for my MBA in Finance. And I've browsed through this new edition - what I found was there were not many changes made, only a few new articles have been added. Perhaps inclusion of some non-American articles would do justice to this book. Chew still keeps the classic ones though, which are always relevant. The roundtable discussion on EVA is interesting but Chew does not include criticisms on EVA shortfalls or problems.
On the whole, this text should be a reasonable introduction to high-level Finance and also a good supplementary reading for those doing MBA in Finance. But the editor's selection between technical and easy-to-read-but-important articles still leaves much to be desired.....

A Deeper Understanding of Low-Intensity Conflict and the War on Terror

It’s not possible to make sense of the War on Terror and other so-called low intensity conflicts going on around the world without the analysis given in "New and Old Wars". It provides two key insights. First, the primary participants in these conflicts, with the exception of the Western powers, do not involve nation-states, and so the types of military and political resolution that the people of the USA are accustomed to are not possible, and second, civilians are the primary and intended victims and casualties of the fighting; civilian casualties are not just an unfortunate or collateral by-product. They can be combatants as well as victims: at what point does a jihadi sympathizer change from being an “innocent” civilian to a terrorist? Clearly, the current media treatment of “civilian” casualties needs refinement. The current non-differentiated approach is not especially helpful.

Insight into the ends, if they can be called that, of these conflicts is also clarified as essentially the exercise of power, or at least the attempt to, by those marginalized from the technologically advanced, capitalistic, liberal democracy global mainstream on the basis of ethnicity or religion. This can explain a lot, the role of terrorism and atrocity, for example, and carries the implication that a war may not the means to a political end, but rather the end in itself.

A question that the book leaves open is whether identity-based conflict and the resulting ethnic cleansing can be reversed once it is established. If not, Iraq and Syria as they were heretofore known are not recoverable.

"New and Old Wars" contains unsettling implications for the USA. Policy makers of both the left and right don’t seem to be able to grasp that they are not dealing with nation-states in these conflicts, with the result that the military and political approaches to them are in most cases exercises in futility. Another is whether it is possible that the growing disparity in wealth will create an environment in which “new wars” are endemic, and a constant supply of marginalized youth to fight them.

What a good, honest, conscientious voice... The ONLY bad thing about the book is that everything she is warning about is already on its way to being true and there is no sign anyone in the wealthy countries understands, or cares. But I am very glad I read this book. For one thing, it gives a very solid basic understanding of the Bosinian War.

It's not a bad book but not a great one either

It's not a bad book but not a great one either. A fairly decent book. I liked Nison's more and i believe it is better to start with that one. If, after reading that one, you feel the need to read something more concerning this subject, candlesticks, than you can choose this one. Other than a supplement i do not believe the book has a purpose.

Very good for candles

Good intro to candlestick bar trading , the first chapters are good, they give you an overview of major signals , especially the second chapter it's really good . Later you also have a good couple of chapters with real examples... but then the author wrote about trend , pattern, elliot wave , etc and all of those topics received a mediocre treatment , it seems like the rest of the book is there just to fill the pages . That said, the candlestick part it's indeed very good .
