Fascinating and disturbing

An interesting account of the rise of ISIS. The author has seen the damage and talked to the survivors. But it's hard to decide whether there isn't something of a conspiracy theory at work here. He sees secular Baathists as important in constructing ISIS. It's a grab for power and the religious fanaticism is only the means. Maybe -- but I'm skeptical.

J�rgen M. Meisel is Professor Emeritus of Linguistics in the Department of Romance Languages and a member and former Chair (1999-2006) of the Research Center on Bilingualism at the University of Hamburg.
