First I gotta say I really enjoy listening to Steve Ray every time he's on Catholic Answers Live on the local EWTN radio station. His energy and his knowledge and his patience and his question answering ability about the Catholic church is just amazing.

I love this book for its content and Steve's tale of conversion. That being said I'm disappointed in what the book turned out to be. I was expecting to hear about his journey. Instead, according to my Kindle app, I find I'm done reading the book at only 43%. That's right 57% of this book is footnotes!

I would say Steve's story itself is maybe 10 percent or less of the 43% of the book. The rest of the book (while fine) reads more like a college paper. He sets up three topics and then defends them with EXTENSIVE quotes from the bible, the catechism and the church fathers, not much of his own story or his way of defending the church. Which is fine, but I didn't think I was purchasing a simple reference book. I want to hear Steve talk not simply quote source material.

I feel this book is meant to be purchased printed so that you can give it to a protestant to read or to have on hand for quick reference. But you'll need a lot more reference books because Steve only covers those three topics.

A relentless search for truth whereever it leads

Steve had a problem. He knew Jesus was for real but he was beginning to find that his presuppositions about the church were not. This is the story of how he fought against the Tiber tide until he could fight no longer and gave in to that which he had persecuted for so long. ("Crossing the Tiber" or "Swimming the Tiber" is popular Catholic convert slang referring to the Tiber river in Rome with regard to joining the Roman Catholic church.) Steve is one of many Protestants who had realized their one defining principle was that they were not Catholic. Their search for the roots of their faith led them to see the internal contradictions in the Protestant worldview and the discoveries were frightening and life-altering. Steve was goaded on to the deep Tiber waters by his loving wife and it is clear that the changes have been a spiritual empowerment in their family.

With extensive footnotes that do not distract from the primary text, Steve relays their story as he first wrote it down for friends and family. It is a heartfelt and appealing story that makes us want to join in the journey with them. The journey ends with their somewhat hesitant realization that Jesus was alive and well in the Catholic church they had distrusted. It was a conversion not far from that of the Apostle Paul in realizing the one whom they persecuted was calling them to His family.

The brief overview of the Ray family conversion is just the beginning. Steve adds to that story an historical, scriptural, and enlightening study of Baptism and then of the Eucharist. Each of the three sections could stand alone in scope and depth of study, especially in light of the extensive footnotes and references. It is a conversion story that packs a theological wallop without skipping a beat. Emotionally and intellectually challenging and inspiring at the same time. You will not easily dismiss this incredible treatise of faith.

May, 1992. Hana is twelve years old when she is put on one of the last UN evacuation buses fleeing the besieged city of Sarajevo. In Sarajevo, death lurks in every corner and shakes the foundation of their existence. One day their beloved uncle is killed while queuing up for bread in the market square, in a massacre similar to the one three months earlier which prompted a cellist to make a lone musical protest in the deserted streets. But when Atka finds work as a translator in an old, smoky radio station, and then with a photojournalist from New Zealand, life takes an unexpected turn, and the remarkable events that follow change her life, and those of her family, forever.

About the Author

Atka (Kafedzic) Reid was born in Sarajevo in 1970. At the outbreak of the Bosnian war, she was a political science student. During the war, she worked as a reporter for a local radio station and as an interpreter for the foreign press. Upon her arrival in New Zealand she worked as a journalist in Christchurch. She later gained a Diploma in graphic design and worked as a graphic designer. She and Andrew, the New Zealand photojournalist she met in Sarajevo, live in Auckland with their two sons.

Hana (Kafedzic) Schofield was born in Sarajevo in 1979. She spent two years living as a refugee in Croatia during the siege of Sarajevo. In 1995 she arrived in New Zealand with her family, speaking no English. In 2002 she graduated from the University of Canterbury with first class honours in Law and a bachelor's degree in Russian. Since then she has worked as a lawyer for a leading New Zealand law firm, and more recently for a City law firm in London. Hana is also a qualified performance consultant. She is married to James and lives in Auckland.

Uplifting

Goodbye Sarajevo is an unputdownable read. I was immediately drawn into the lives of the family and could feel what they went through. Notwithstanding the horrific ordeal this family experienced, this is a truly uplifting story and I am all the better for having read it. The human spirit is capable of enduring and facing hardship finding its way through the other side and becoming even better and stronger than before. Looking at one's own life, day to day problems pale into the insignificance they generally are relative to the tribulations of living through a military siege. Extremely well written, this is an open and honest account from two sisters that bare their souls and show their family to the world.

A beautiful story that should resonate with people everywhere

This is a beautiful and thoughtful piece of literature. It is the first novel that I have read that is commensurate with the complexity and beauty of the region, and it so obviously stems from a place of deep love. It was a story that needed to be told - and I think that the reader is exceptionally lucky to have the story told from women who experienced this conflict directly.

About the Author
Barbara Aehlert is the President of Southwest EMS Education, Inc. in Phoenix, Arizona and Pursley, Texas. She has been a registered nurse for more than 30 years with clinical experience in medical/surgical and critical care nursing and, for the past 18 years, in prehospital education. Barbara is an active CPR, First Aid, ACLS, and PALS instructor and takes a special interest in teaching basic dysrhythmia recognition to nurses and paramedics. She is a consultant with the Southwest Ambulance paramedic program in Mesa, Arizona, and an active member of the Pursley, Texas, Volunteer Fire Department.

Text Book Required - Great Learning

I am only half-way through the class. Everything is in here for EKG Certification. What more can be said, it wasn't a choice, it's a required text book. The class is great and the instructor is a wealth of knowledge. I cannot wait to begin my new career.

The Real Story of How Creativity Happens

I agree with the existing reviews, and I want to add that this is an essential contribution to our understanding of creativity and the creative process, in all domains. The impact of this book goes far beyond the sociology of art. I read this book while I was writing the first edition (2006) of my creativity textbook, _Explaining Creativity: The Science of Human Innovation_, and it is a valuable counterpart to psychological theories of creativity, which tend to be overly focused on the solitary individual. The take-home message of Becker's book is that you cannot explain creativity only by explaining the creator. A full explanation requires that you analyze all sorts of things that are external to the creator--the materials being used, the support staff that must be hired, the conventions and norms shared by colleagues, the nature of the venues where work is displayed. Each chapter in Becker's book dives deep into an analysis of one of these extra-personal elements of what he calls the "art world." One of the last chapters, titled "What lasts," analyzes how a creator's body of work evolves AFTER THEY DIE--how certain works are preserved and displayed, while others sit in the warehouse or even get destroyed. This book radically shifts the explanation of creativity away from the individual and toward the social and cultural context. It is so well written and so well argued that everyone who reads it is convinced.

Not only does he define "art world," which is critical for the study of the arts, but he covers so many topics of the arts (from creation, to sales, to networks, etc).
