About the Author

Dean Baker has more than 25 years of research experience in occupational and environmental epidemiology. The primary emphasis of his research has been on community-based epidemiological studies. During the past several years, he has focused on developmental toxicity and children's environmental health. He has conducted several epidemiological research studies examining chronic health effects of gestational and early childhood exposure to heavy metals and organochlorine chemicals. His other area of research has been on the health effects of psychosocial stressors in the workplace and in communities exposed to environmental hazards. In both of these areas, Dr. Baker has made contributions to the epidemiological study design and methods. He was elected 3 times as Secretary-Treasurer of the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology, and was a founding member. He is an active teacher at the university, directing an occupational medicine residency program and supervising graduate students. Mark J Nieuwenhuijsen has been involved in various environmental exposure assessment, epidemiology, and health risk assessment studies in the Netherlands, the UK, Eastern Europe and the US. His interests include the health effects of chlorination by-products in water, traffic related air pollution and metals, specifically in relation to reproductive, respiratory, renal and cancer effects. He has published over a hundred papers. He graduated from Wageningen University, the Netherlands, and went to do a PhD at the National Heart and Lung Institute in London, UK. For his post doc he went to the University of California, Davis, USA after which he took up a faculty position at Imperial College London, UK. In January 2007 he joined the Center for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) in Barcelona, Spain as a Research Professor. He is associate editor on the journals 'Occupational and Environmental Medicine' and the 'Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology'.

I'd been folowing for this book for a long time. It was a used one but when I opened it, it was something like new. However, it seems like a good quality copy to me. I really do not know, I'm not an expert, but it's not allowed to copy a full book in the US, right? Then it can't be a copy. Sorry I'm just a little bit confused. Maybe it's just very well used?
The price was moderate, but shipping time was good.

The first in a series of children's titles by radio talk-show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Why Do You Love Me? (written with Martha Lambert) is a warm and fuzzy 32-page picture book about unconditional love. Unlike the treasured, bunny-centered Guess How Much I Love You, Schlessinger's text--aimed at a similar, if slightly older, age group--is intended to be reality-based. You won't find any fantastical elements here, just a straight conversation between mother and son about the enduring love the mother feels for her child. Unfortunately, the story's low-key "slice of life" approach isn't reflected in Daniel McFeeley's exaggerated, cartoonish line drawings--a stylistic merging of R. Crumb and Jim "Garfield" Davis.

Schlessinger delivers an important message beneath the Sunday-comics-style presentation: A mother's love is forever and always, no matter how her child behaves. Sammy thinks he might be loved because he's good at sports or is helpful around the house. No, Mother explains, it's because "he's the one and only Sammy there will ever be in the whole world--and you're mine. And that's enough for me to love you all the time." Then Sammy asks if there is ever a time when she doesn't love him, and he offers suggestions of recent bad behavior. "I did not love the yelling, or the hitting, or cleaning off the crayon marks," says Mother. "But I still loved you." Further, she says, "the love in my heart is like the sun in the sky. It is always there, even when you can't see it."

The mother here is never shown to be distracted, overwhelmed, snappy, or sad. And parents may bristle that there's no real discussion of the existence or whereabouts of a parent's love when working, absent, sick, or tired. (Dr. Laura would ask now, "Who cares? It's your kids we're thinking about here.") But this story is meant purely to comfort the young child who fears that their parents' love comes and goes at whim. At that, it fully succeeds. PreSchool-Grade 1-Books written by celebrities or social-service professionals are often disappointing, but this particular volume by a radio talk-show host is well done. A young boy asks his mother why she loves him and wonders if it's because he picks up his toys and helps his friends. He also wonders why she loves him if he crayons on the walls and loses his temper. She explains that although she doesn't always love what he does, her love is like the sun on a cloudy day-it's always there even though he can't see it. While the message works in context, the illustrations don't, as the heavily drawn cartoons are at odds with the gentle mood of the text. Still, this is a reassuring, warm book to share with youngsters at bedtime or any time when presented with those "why" questions that children are so fond of asking.

In September 2000, Dr. Laura will launch a daily television show, syndicated by Paramount Domestic Television. Great book for my 3 year old grandson

My grandson listened intently and was thrilled with the illustrations, when I read it to him and his mother. She wasn't too thrilled when I told her I ordered the book, because Dr. Laura is a bit too conservative for her. But once she heard it, she became a big fan. Our only grand/child is no longer an only child since the recent birth of our second. We now have to discipline him because we now have many more constraints in our daily lives. ie, 'quiet, baby sleeping', 'can't play with you right now, have to feed baby', etc.
It helps his parents, and grand-parents explain that we still love him no matter what. Thank you Dr. Laura. Linda

I loved this book!

What an excellent book to share with children of all ages! This is one of my favorite childrens book. It helps explain to children what it means when you say " I love you". Sammy's questions to his mother are questions many children have, but don't necessarily ask. Reading this book helps them to understand that no matter what they do-good or bad, their parents will love them always. They may be angry with them or upset, but that dosen't mean that their love for their children has stopped. I recommend this book to anyone who loves to read. This is a message everyone should hear and understand no matter what age.

touching, marvelous

This book deals in a meaningful and appropriate way with the emotions and fears that come up in children. As a pre-school teacher I spend a large amount of time in the bookstore in the constant search of fine books. I found this book by chance, reading my way through many, many books, while I was looking for the perfect birthday-gift for one of my students. I had never heard the authors name before. I was immedetialy in awe with the book. Every single word seemed so meaningful. True - this book is written on a subject that is quite obvious for us grown up's and we probably take it for granted. But what a powerful way to tell and remind children that your parents love is unconditional. I'd like to highly recommend it !!!!

But Haskins writes without condescension, and he includes fascinating information in a clear, direct style with short sentences, lots of black-and-white photographs, and personal quotes from Morrison herself about her life and work. He discusses her childhood, her career as an editor (highlighting her encouragement of black women writers), and he gives a very brief outline of each of her books and its critical reception, from The Bluest Eye to Beloved. Of course, the climax comes when she is awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, the first African American to win it. Readers will make readers think about black history, black writers, and, especially black women writers. A good choice for older reluctant readers and for use in adult literacy classes. It is rumored that the Civil Rights hero, Martin Luther King Jr., carried in his pocket a copy of Howard Thurman’s “Jesus and the Disinherited.” Rumors or nay, the similarities between these two magnanimous Christians and their Christo-love-centricism are undeniable. Thurman, a highly educated lawyer who bravely trail-blazed key civil rights cases, unveils the true “religion of Jesus.” Jesus was a Jew. A poor Jew. A poor, minority Jew under the Roman Empire. Jesus stands with the disinherited because he was one of them. So what does this disinherited Jesus teach and preach? The need for a profound “inward center” transformation. Both the oppressors and the oppressed cannot allow fear, deception, or hate to define and propagandize the self over and against the other; only love must stand it their stead.

Here Thurman’s summation of Jesus’ life and teachings: “You must abandon your fear of each other and fear only God. You must not indulge in any deception and dishonesty, even to save your lives. Your words must be Yea-Nay; anything else is evil. Hatred is destructive to hated and hater like. Love your enemy, that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven.”

Beautiful and Powerful Masterpiece

Howard Thurman is well known as one of the 20th century's great mystics, thinkers, and spiritual leaders. "Jesus and the Disinherited" may be his best known book, and it's certainly his most influential. Martin Luther King, Jr. carried a copy with him in his travels and it grounded him as much as any book. It's certainly worth the accolades.

It's a small book, and its organization is basic. Thurman begins by describing people under oppression as the people "With their backs to the wall." Most of what Christians have written about the role of the teachings of Christ in conversations about oppressed people comes from the perspective of those with power who have an obligation to help those who do not have power. Thurman affirms this approach, and compares it to the perspective of Paul, who, though a Jew and regularly persecuted for the Gospel, always had the power to assert his Roman citizenship. His was a chosen powerlessness, and he occasionally chose to use his societal power.

Jesus, God Incarnate, chose to take his place among those "with their backs to the wall." Thurman believes that Jesus' life and teachings can only be understood from this vantage point. He argues that those who have never been powerless cannot fully understand what it means to have society's structures and systems turned not to their benefit and protection but to their subjugation and humiliation.

Thurman describes how the life and teachings of Jesus relate to the great enemies of the soul--fear, deception, and hate. He is a master not only of the faith but also of psychology and society. The final chapter is about love, and how love between those in power and those with their backs against the wall can only be the result of relationships built on mutuality. He thinks the church is the best place for such relationships to form, and laments that congregations are so segregated and do not allow such relationships to form.

Love is a miracle, and all of society makes the enemies of the soul and the possibility of the love Jesus describes incredibly difficult. One of the great wonders of the Jesus story is that he is a person with his back against the wall who was able to demonstrate the possibility of living in an oppressive situation without giving in to fear, deception, or hate. Jesus was able to love, even his enemies. This fact alone gives tremendous hope that those with their backs against the wall may actually live in such a way. Thurman certainly did.

Howard Thurman wrote in the midst of the Civil Rights struggle, and he talks about his conversations with a grandmother who had spent her childhood in slavery. People like me, who take our freedom and privilege for granted, should read the book, if for no other reason, to get a sense of the interior struggles others face.

Our world is full of fear, deception, and hate. The kind of love Jesus demonstrates and Thurman describes is rare, indeed. This book is a training manual for those who would live in this world with souls untouched by its cruelty.

Special-warfare devotees will find this to their liking: an insider's account of the Navy's amphibious commandos known as SEALS, by one of the group's most controversial veterans, along with Weisman (coauthor of Shadow Warrior ). Marcinko describes his combat adventures in Southeast Asia in the '60s; his command of SEAL Team Six, one of the most effective counterterrorist outfits in the world, in the '70s; and his pioneering leadership in the '80s of Red Cell, a unit designed to test the Navy's vulnerability to terrorists. Super-macho in outlook and behavior, Marcinko delights in recalling the traditionally gross behavior of the SEALS as well as his own unique experiences such as eating the brains of a live monkey to impress his Cambodian allies. The super-secret Red Cell successfully penetrated many key U.S. naval installations, creating so much havoc that Marcinko was arrested. An autobiography of a career naval officer who dropped out of high school, enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and spent his ca reer struggling to win acceptance for special warfare SEAL (sea-air-land) units within the Navy establishment from the late 1950s to the present. Marcinko provides detailed descriptions of the early transformation of underwater demolition teams (UDT) into SEAL units. With interesting vignettes about training and actual missions during the Vietnam War, he gives a close-up view of this specialized and little-known brand of warfare. Marcinko's participation in the Iran hostage rescue attempt in 1980 and the U.S. invasion of Grenada in 1983 provide a perspective vastly different from the accepted versions of these events. However, the overuse of salty language throughout the book that lends new meaning to the phrase "curse like a sailor" and Marcinko's polemical accounts of his struggles to win acceptance for specialized warfare within the Navy are unfortunate. The stormy career of a top Navy SEAL hotspur. Commander Marcinko, USN Ret., recently served time at Petersburg Federal Prison for conspiracy to defraud the Navy by overcharging for specialized equipment--the result, he says, of telling off too many admirals. It seems that his ornery and joyous aggression, nurtured by a Czech grandfather in a flinty Pennsylvania mining town, has brought him to grief in peace and to brilliance in war. Serving his first tour in Vietnam in 1966 as an enlisted SEAL expert in underwater demolition, Marcinko returned for a second tour as an officer leading a commando squad he had trained. Here, his accounts of riverine warfare--creeping underwater to Vietcong boats and slipping over their gunwales; raiding VC island strongholds in the South China Sea; steaming up to the Cambodian border to tempt the VC across and being overrun- -are galvanic, detailed, and told with a true craftsman's love. What did he think of the Vietcong? ``The bastards--they were good.'' His battle philosophy? ``...kill my enemy before he has a chance to kill me....Never did I give Charlie an even break.'' After the aborted desert rescue of US hostages in the Tehran embassy, Marcinko was ordered to create SEAL Team Six--a counterterrorist unit with worldwide maritime responsibilities. In 1983, the unit was deployed to Beirut to test the security of the US embassy there. Easily evading the embassy security detail, sleeping Lebanese guards, and the Marines, the SEALs planted enough fake bombs to level the building. When Marcinko spoke to ``a senior American official'' about the problem, the SEAL's blunt security advice was rejected, particularly in respect to car-bomb attacks. Ninety days later, 63 people in the embassy compound were killed by a suicide bomber driving a TNT-filled truck. Profane and asking no quarter: the real nitty-gritty, bloody and authentic. not as good as it was when conceived

Very interesting story of the struggles of one very determined warrior. He had to fight the establishment most of his life and after creating Seal Team Six, he had no opportunity to lead them into actual battle. Seal Team Six is what it is today, however, not as good as it was when conceived, but still the most effective special ops unit in the world. On several occasions he was asked to test the security of different military bases and after demonstrating that the bases had little if any security, he was severely criticized for doing such a good job. The base commanders and the admirals in charged were very embarrassed by him demonstrating how bad the situation was. He even went aboard a couple nuclear submarines and set dummy bombs on the reactors. He and his men were able to go about any where they wanted to go on the bases without causing much concern. In one of his escapades in (Red Cell) he actually went into the office of the CNO and went through his files . He and his Seals were really sneaky. Great reading.

Tough Hombre

I am sure the author deserves all the accolades, and has earned all the medals of a distinguished career. This guy is John Wayne multiplied by 10, very full of himself, as he describes how he challenged one and all, that did not meet his high standard of training and demeanor. I found it interesting enough, but because of the nature of the way in which he talks about his life, and how he put in their place even Green Berets, as if compared to his outfit, there were of lesser impact, I grew a little skeptical as I read along. That he is tough there is no doubt, that he is larger than life, either. Rogue Warrior by Richard Marcinko is a wild ride, from a highly decorated and respected american warrior. To that extent this seal conveys the certainty that he would be the right fighter to have around in a serious fight. 3.5 Stars.

The best non-fiction war book out there today about the Navy S.E.A.L.'s and how Seal Team SIX was created. This is the auto-biography of Richard Marcinko and how the U.S. Navy tasked him with creating the world's best counter terrorist team. He does talk a lot about his Vietnam days as a SEAL and how he operated and came up with the idea for SEAL TEAM SIX, even though the Navy only had 2 SEAL Teams at the time.
