Problem Solving and Programming Concepts (9th Edition), by Maureen Sprankle, Jim Hubbard

Problem Solving and Programming Concepts, 9/e, is a core or supplementary text for one-semester, freshman/sophomore-level introductory courses taken by programming majors in Problem Solving for Programmers, Problem Solving for Applications, any Computer Language Course, or Introduction to Programming.

Revised to reflect the most current issues in the programming industry, this widely adopted text emphasizes that problem solving is the same in all computer languages, regardless of syntax. Sprankle and Hubbard use a generic, non-language-specific approach to present the tools and concepts required when using any programming language to develop computer applications. Designed for students with little or no computer experience — but useful to programmers at any level — the text provides step-by-step progression and consistent in-depth coverage of topics, with detailed explanations and many illustrations.

expensive door stop
By RunStewRun
The concepts in this book are hard to follow the way the authors write them. My class has been told that many of the references and terms used in this book are inaccurate or out-dated.

The worst thing about this book, however, was the index! When you try to use the index to find a topic, you have to go to the page sited and then go forward X number of pages until you actually find the topic you were originally looking for!

Textbooks are expensive enough, but to have to purchase one that has an index that doesn't sync with the text?!

I could not bring myself to sell this textbook used to someone, it would just perpetuate the crime.

I have never seen such uninformative textbook. while it has many "tips" it is worthless to anyone just starting programming in any language.

A pain in the behind book if ever there was one...
By tania
This is a textbook for a course I teach and, honestly, I don't care if my students buy it or not.
It actually says things like: static, needing an object to reference it. This is, arguably, wrong. It doesn't and only confuses them on this and a number of other points.
Dislike it immensely.

Great value for beginners
By Louis E. Dargin
This book is basically an updated version of "OpenGL Game Programming", with the old chapters on DirectX placed in a CD-ROM. It is definitely for C++ programmers who are unfamiliar with OpenGL. It doesn't focus on intermediate or advanced topics like performance, 3d math, collision detection, etc; it just covers the API. If you want to start learning OpenGL, and would like to use it to quickly make something that you can see, I recommend this book.

A Great Buy for Beginners
By B.
Beginning OpenGL Game Programming is a great introduction for those with little to no experience with OpenGL.

I have used it both as an introduction for a few projects I worked on as well as a refresher for a position I will soon begin.

Intended for a beginner (obviously), it does a very good job of getting someone up to speed swiftly. Unlike the many other books in the field, it manages to stay at only roughly 300 pages. That the authors managed to put so much information in such a (relatively) small number of pages is impressive.

The book doesn't waste time with stories and constant vernacular like "cool" and "dude" as so many other related titles do. However, while maintaining a professional feel, it is by no means a boring or a dry read.

Another aspect that is worth mentioning is the quality of the code and examples themselves. While most books will build a massive, hard to follow engine, Beginning OpenGL Game Programming manages to keep it under control. Much like the book itself, the source is without unnecessary bloat. I was able to look back on any chapter and read the source without having to jump to prior chapters for code clarification or explanation.

Lastly, I can say firsthand that the authors are easily reached and quite dedicated to the book.

For the incredibly low price, this is a terrific bargain.

Best OpenGL Book Ever (not counting the sequel to this book)
By Jon Redfield
While all the information in this book can be found free on the net, (nehe.gamedev.net would be an excellent resource and is even mentioned in the book), the book combines all that knowledge into one location with each topic thoroughly covered in an easily accessible way.

It doesn't try to teach you how to program C++ nor does it try to teach you 3D math fundamentals (outside of how matrices and transformations apply to OpenGL specifically). It just teaches you OpenGL. With that said, there are some bonus chapters on the CD that goes into vectors and matrix math, as well as an indepth chapter on how to work with windows. The other bonus chapters are great and worth studying as well, particularly the chapters on DirectInput and DirectAudio (though I would love to see at least some mention of alternative API's such as OpenAL).

Each chapter is presented with sample code and executables demonstrating the topic covered. Chapter 13 has a complete 3D Battle Chess style chess game. It won't win any awards, but it's very cool none-the-less! If that weren't enough, there's also a Bonus game, complete with code, that while not quite as cool as the chess game, is worth studying on how the authors put a game together, complete with (very) basic AI and gives you clues and direction toward implementing your own game.

Get this book and mess with the code! See what you can add to the Bonus Game! Try to make the monsters fight back, remove the double explosion sound bug (at least on my machine), make the world bigger and reduce the density of the fog, go nuts!

This isn't the last OpenGL book you'll need to buy, but it certainly should be one of the first!

Better for All the World: The Secret History of Forced Sterilization and America's Quest for Racial Purity, by Harry Bruinius

A timely and gripping history of the controversial eugenics movement in America–and the scientists, social reformers and progressives who supported it.In Better for All the World, Harry Bruinius charts the little known history of eugenics in America–a movement that began in the early twentieth century and resulted in the forced sterilization of more than 65,000 people. Bruinius tells the stories of Emma and Carrie Buck, two women trapped in poverty who became the test case in the 1927 supreme court decision allowing forced sterilization for those deemed unfit to procreate. From the reformers who turned local charities into government-run welfare systems promoting social and moral purity, to the influence the American policies had on Nazi Germany’s development of “racial hygiene,” Bruinius masterfully exposes the players and legislation behind one of America’s darkest secrets.

From Publishers Weekly
In the early years of the 20th century, a fixation on eugenics led several states to approve forced sterilization to keep thousands of Americans from producing "morally inferior" or "feeble-minded" offspring. Bruinius's greatest accomplishment in his retelling of this blot on our nation's history is forcing readers to recognize the humanity of the victims of these policies. He begins with Carrie Buck, a young Virginia woman used by state medical authorities as a test case to get the courts to legitimize their program. At times, Bruinius's account of the events leading up to her sterilization employs a novelistic level of detail, such as recreating the mental state of participants, a technique also applied to discussing the lives of the scientists whose theories drove the eugenics movement. (These stories have their bittersweet ironies; one leading eugenicist was an epileptic, while another's daughter showed signs of dyslexia.) The tone occasionally slips into excessive moralizing when he underscores the relationship between American eugenics and Nazi Germany, but the connections are certainly there. This history isn't as "secret" as the title makes it out to be—it's been told most recently by Edwin Black in War Against the Weak—but Bruinius brings compelling drama to the narrative that should give it broad appeal. From The New Yorker
In 1927, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of sterilizing a twenty-one-year-old woman thought to be "feebleminded," and Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote for the majority, "It is better for all the world, if . . . society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind." This precedent led to the escalation of eugenics in the United States, and the coercive sterilization of more than sixty-five thousand people (many of whom were poor women). Bruinius deftly combines analysis of how the American quest for moral and social purity prepared people to accept pseudo-science as a basis for national policy with an account of the personal and intellectual development of eugenics' most influential American advocates—Charles Davenport and Harry Laughlin. Both from religious families, they wanted to "retranslate" Puritan ethics into scientific practice, and aimed at "tracing the genetic roots of 'sin.' "

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Bruinius' account of one of America's dirty little secrets is that rare thing for nonfiction, a real page-turner. From the moment he begins telling the story of Carrie Buck, who at 21 underwent forced sterilization at the hands of Dr. John H. Bell at the Virginia Colony for Epileptics and the Feebleminded in 1927, to the moment he concludes the forced sterilization story of a woman known as Lucille in 1942, it is hard to put the book down. Compelling as the anecdotes he relays are, Bruinius supplements them with well-documented quotations, hard data, and the legal and legislative records of how 30 states implemented forced sterilization; how the U.S. Supreme Court, with landmark liberal justice Oliver Wendell Holmes in the majority, upheld forced sterilization in a decision that has not been overturned; how Nazi Germany's eugenics laws were modeled on those in the U.S.; and how more than 65,000 people, mostly women, were sterilized against their will in the U.S. until as recently as the 1970s. He outlines how the notion of American ethnic purity and the quasi science of eugenics combined to spawn dangerous, dehumanizing practices and how the threat of resurgent involuntary sterilization looms when the concepts of inalienable rights and human dignity encounter "Darwinian reductionism and the myth of human progress." Eugenics was a protestant, jewish, left & feminist's business
By Dalton C. Rocha
I read this book, here in Brazil. This book is easy to read.Compared to "War against the weak" by Edwin Black, this book is smaller and a little better.
To example, while "War against the weak" didn't told that the famous american eugenicist Charles B. Davenport hadn't any grandson, this book shows that even having two daughters, both of his daughters had no child.
Even so, this book repeats many of the same mistakes made by Edwin Black's book "War against the weak".Some examples of these same mistakes are:
1-Even showing , about eugenics, the right way of catholics and the wrong way by protestants and jews, this book doesn't tells why among eugenics, religion decided so many.Support of eugenics was almost universal among famous jews and protestants in USA; at least until when Hitler came to power, in 1933.At the same times, Roman Catholic Church was eugenics' number one foe in USA.This book didn't tells that while Roman Catholicism had (and has) a Pope, protestants and jews were "following the bible", when they supported the eugenics.Such as happened during witch-hunting and slavery's times, many famous and powerfull people found on bible, support for eugenics. At the same times, there was not just one eugenics, even in USA there was hundreds of eugenics, while having tens of judaisms and hundreds of protestantisms.Jews and protestants saw on eugenics, such as a a mirror of his own religious believes.Only the opposition from Pope, priests and bishops didn't explained why eugenics was ever a failure, among catholic countries.Divorce existed in France and Italy, since XIX Century (both more than 90% catholics at eugenics's time).Eugenics was a godless religion, having many sects, even in USA.
2-Such as on Edwin Black's book, this book has too many space, about both Dr. Laughlin and Charles B. Davenport. They were both neurothic and crooks, but they were following orders from rich and powerfull americans; many of them jews. When in Hitler's times(1933-1945), they became useless both went to fame to nothing in a few years.About Laughlin's family, on page 180, this book writes:"Kirksville was the home of Andrew Taylor Still the visionary healer whose eccentric treatment methods physical manipulations to improve the body's natural functions." on same page 180:"Earl attended the osteopathic college".Well, osteopathy wasn't a type of medicine , but only quackery.Harry Laughlin's family was linked to quackery, but this book forgets this thing.
3-Too many american doctors of both sexes, were among eugenics's leaders. This same happended in every country where eugenics existed.Well, why this happened in USA and all the world?Because medicine was next to useless in eugenics' times.Even so, some decades before eugenics' creation, the doctors had replaced the pastors and religious leaders as God's preachers among people's minds. They were maily useless, but the people wanted something to believe.Having no medicine for the desiases, they told that eugenics was the solution, for medical and social problems in USA and many other protestants countries.
4-The same rich and powerfull americans who gave money, to Lenin, Russian Revolution and Hitler were also famous eugenicists. This book forgets this fact.
5-Feminism in America was deeply linked to eugenics. There's almost nothing about feminism in this book.
6-After World War II, eugneics became "population control" or neo-malthusianism in USA.Just one line of this book is about this very important fact.

This book is better than "War Against the weak" , but it remains a little weak many times.

"Better for All the World : The Secret History of Forced Sterilization ...

I was unaware of these disturbing historical events until quite recently, which is why i sought out this book. It seems well written and documented. I have not finished reading this yet and plan on sharing it with friends.

Gripping and Timely
By Aram Sinnreich
I was absolutely absorbed by this book, which deftly interweaves the story of Eugenics as an abstract idea with the story of its all-too-real progenitors. Far too little is known about the American origins of this racist pseudo-science, and Bruinius manages to tell us all about it without ever sounding preachy or didactic. One of the best non-fiction books I've read in years, and a potent warning to those who would place too much faith in either science or ideology -- at the expense of real human lives.

Still a dummy but good book
By Tony
Teaching a non-accountant how to run the business books is no small task and can take months to cultivate a basic understanding. Book keeping for dummies provided good basic accounting skills, the strange language, and not-to-do's content that I would expect. I have used it many times trying to navigate Sage Complete Peachtree. However, there are still some accounting nuances that really need more detail in these books, like company credit cards liability and the whole chart of accounts vendor stuff so the dollars goes into the right bucket. Basically tell me which bucket to put the bucks into! Still, I would recommend for anyone facing the same problem when starting from an empty shell.

Failed to explain bookkeeping.
By Matt
Don't waste your money on this book. There are much better explanations of bookkeeping available on the internet for free. Try googling "double entry bookkeeping tutorial".
The primary reason I bought this book was to understand double entry bookkeeping: debits, credits, ledgers, journals, etc.
Unfortunately, while the book addresses these topics, it does not explain them. For example, for debits & credits the best the author can do is print a table and basically ask the reader to memorize it. I don't want to memorize stuff. I want to understand the logic behind a system so that I can figure the details out on my own.
The author also spends a lot of time explaining the process of closing the books at the end of an accounting period. She makes it sound so onerous and complicated that any reasonable person would conclude that it is better to just hire an accountant. Maybe the author is an accountant trying to drum up business?
Another complaint I have with the book is that every example the author uses to illustrate bookkeeping involves a retail store. I bet most small businesses are not retail stores. The principles of accounting are basic, they apply to retail stores, service businesses, non-profits, governments, households. How about a variety of examples to show how the system works for these various types of entities?

FROM THE BEST-SELLING AUTHOR OF 100 DAYS IN DEADLAND
The seven deadly sins with a shambling twist.
It has been one hundred days since the zombies claimed the world. Cash, along with forty-two survivors, have found safety in the secluded and well-guarded Fox National Park. The leaves are changing colors, a beautiful, brutal reminder that winter is coming. As the survivors prepare for freezing months without electricity and not enough food, they learn of massive zombie herds several hundred miles north...and headed their way.
To save the park, Cash must find a place for the survivors to hide from the migrating herds. If Cash and her small band of volunteers don't succeed by winter, the Fox survivors just may become Deadland's Harvest.
Deadland's Harvest is a journey through Dante Alighieri's classic tale on the seven deadly sins... zombie apocalypse style!

Cash and Clutch are back!
By R. Dunbar
"Deadland's Harvest" is one of those books where you resent the slightest interruption of your reading. If you go to the fridge for a snack, you're going to want to carry it with you. Yes, it's just that involving.
Rachel Aukes continues the saga begun in "100 Days in Deadland," right where the first volume left off, making it indeed a continuation, rather than a sequel.
The story continues to move forward at a breakneck pace, while the characters, in adapting to their radically altered reality, evolve in subtle and totally believable ways. Comparisons to Dante's "Divine Comedy " provide a standard that at first glance, would seem almost impossible to live up to, and yet, Ms. Aukes pulls it off with a comfortable sensibility. The embodiment of the Deadly sins, for instance, never feels forced or contrived. In Aukes' prose, these traits seem to be "just there," the way they appear to be in people we observe in our everyday reality.
"Deadland's Harvest" is a compelling read, one that the reader will find himself thinking about long after the last page has been turned.

Harvest this saga for a good read.
By ScottB
The saga so far is worth the read. Rachel continues her main character development 'the strong female role' and you will start seeing a stronger cohesion throughout the book. Rachel keeps you thinking about ,not only the zombies, but personal and family growth. It's a very entertaining read if you are into the zombie genre and personal achievement and loss.
Rachel's style of writing is easy to read and keeps you focused on the various characters and story lines she's developing. You will notice when the characters go through many setbacks they still strive to live and move on. Rachel makes this very evident in her writing. Oddly enough it's a very tragic book but it encompasses many positive aspects of human nature.
I look forward to her last installment of the saga.

~~Slower/Smellier/Uglier~~
By USN Chief, Ret..VT Town
Seven months after the outbreak finds Cash and the rest of the group at Camp Fox. The Camp has around 50 survivors but more are arriving daily. Therein lies the problem for Captain Tyler Madsen. The amount of food is ample now but won't last long with more mouths to feed. Clutch is recovering from his back injury and is becoming more frustrated as the days continue without him being able to walk.

The zeds appear to be getting slower, smellier and uglier. The stench is overbearing when one is in close contact with them. Some of the newly arrived survivors tell Captain Madsen that he fears the zeds are starting to migrate to the South. This is the point in the book where the action intensifies and continues to the very last page.

Cash gets into her Cessna with a small crew and goes on recon missions. And what they observe in the air is indeed mind boggling. Captain Madsen finally makes contact with Captain Sorenson on a riverboat . The leaders of Camp Fox are hopeful that he may be able to offer some assistance.

I love the Pied Piper tactics that were utilized in the fight against the zeds! And, the funeral service for one of the members of Camp Fox is most poignant. Despite all of the action involved, the author has also interjected some humor at the right spots!

The action encompasses many different levels as well as some nasty injuries to the Camp Fox personnel. The characters are well developed, plot is tightly sewn together and an incredible surprise ending (which I always appreciate).

Most highly recommended and well done to this author...
