Disappointed

Whether you find this book helpful or not will depend partly on how much you already know about providing therapy online. If you don't know much about technology and haven't thought about how online services differ from face-to-face services it can give you a helpful introduction. However, by no means does this book provide you with enough information to begin practicing online. I learned very little, and found some significant oversights. For example, the authors state that Skype is encrypted, which it is, but fail to mention that it has major security problems and is not HIPAA compliant. Simply google "Skype security problems" and you can learn all about those issues. The book completely ignores issues related to working across jurisdictions (e.g. outside of the location where you are licensed). This is an important issue, as the laws will be different from state to state or country to country. The ethics chapter was helpful, but too general. They state that as part of the informed consent, clients should be informed of the pros and cons specific to online counseling. Great advice, but some examples of what to include, or a sample informed consent statement would be helpful. There are other important issues that are untouched - such as details of managing risk and crisis, issues with billing insurance (Blue Cross Blue Shield pays best for online services), issues of liability insurance coverage, how to verify a client's identity and current location, etc. Overall, I did not find the book worthwhile, but unfortunately most of the books on this topic are either outdated or only have a few reviews. I guess I will have to look into some of the online continuing education training for advice, or cobble together the information I need from the academic literature.
