If you or someone you love is struggling with borderline personality disorder (BPD), you need up-to-date, accurate, and accessible information on the problems you’re facing and where you can turn for help. But where do you look? Much of the professional literature on BPD is too technical and confusing to be of much help. And searching the Internet for accurate information can be treacherous, with some sites providing useful information and others giving dangerous advice and misinformation. If you’re living with BPD, this compassionate book offers what you really need: an easy-to-follow road map to guide you through this disorder and its treatment.
This book provides answers to many of the questions you might have about BPD: What is BPD? How long does it last? What other problems co-occur with BPD? Overviews of what we currently know about BPD make up the first section of the book. Later chapters cover several common treatment approaches to BPD: DBT, mentalization-based treatment (MBT), and medication treatments. In the last sections of the book, you’ll learn a range of useful coping skills that can help you manage your emotions, deal with suicidal thoughts, and cope with some of the most distressing symptoms of BPD.
This book has been awarded The Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies Self-Help Seal of Merit — an award bestowed on outstanding self-help books that are consistent with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) principles and that incorporate scientifically tested strategies for overcoming mental health difficulties. Used alone or in conjunction with therapy, our books offer powerful tools readers can use to jump-start changes in their lives.

Review
The Borderline Personality Disorder Survival Guide is exactly what its title suggests. Through the use of many rich clinical examples and exacting and intriguing metaphors, Chapman and Gratz take us through the diagnosis and probable causes of BPD, some of the myths about BPD, and possible explanations of the problems that often accompany BPD. They review both psychological and medication treatments and end up with very practical advice on how to deal with suicidal thoughts as well as with situations when control over one's emotions seems tenuous at best. Clearly written and easily read, this book truly is a practical everyday guide not only to surviving but to growing healthier while struggling with BPD.
—Kenneth R Silk, MD, professor of psychiatry and director of the Personality Disorders Program at the University of Michigan Medical School and Health System

gave me hope
By anna johnson
The first book i read on bpd (stop walking on eggshells) was horribly insensitive and left me feeling angry and hopeless.
Luckily i read this one next, and it gave me hope that i could actually learn to cope with BPD. I have now been in DBT therapy for 11 months, and it has completely changed my life.
It is just an introduction, but it offers hope for a very complicated diagnosis.
Read this book, and then follow through with a good therapist, who specializes in DBT.
You will be amazed at the difference it makes in every aspect of your life.

Fantastic read if you have been diagnosed with BPD
By KnittyKitty
This is a wonderful book with so much great information. As someone diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, I found it to be very compassionate and hopeful. Any one who has just received this diagnosis, should read this book to get an idea of what the disorder entails and what the various methods of treatment are. The detail is wonderful and I can't say enough about how much it has helped me acknowledge and start working on the behaviors and thoughts that are a result of my BPD.

Wish I had found this one months ago

First off, I really appreciate the compassionate and optimistic approach the authors take to BPD. When trying to learn about a condition like this, the jaded outlook that many authors take can make it difficult to get past and absorb the information & facts presented. Also, if someone is reading for themselves and are not sufficiently grounded, negative books can be very harmful.
I have a former partner whom I suspect has BPD & the first book I read on the subject was "I Hate You - Please Don't Leave Me". That book was informative, but quite harsh and pessimistic. This one had a better balance - research supported facts - but maybe a little too "soft" if that makes any sense.
I also found myself wanting much more. For example, the chapter on prognosis was really good, but it pretty much only talked about recovery in the context of post-hospitalization. I would assume many people with BPD don't need hospitalization - what is the course of recovery and prognosis like for them?
All in all, an excellent resource for both those suffering with BPD and those suffering alongside them...who knows, maybe if I had found it 6 months ago...
