Those years in America, the 1920s, are often considered as the Roaring Twenties: a decade of great social change, a decade of jazz, an age of success and American Dream, an age of everything. The American Dream is often described as the aspiration of young Americans to live better than their parents: without war, poverty and misfortune but with love, wealth and happiness. In fact after World War I many Americans wished to return to the peaceful time they had before the war. During the 1920s, Americans focused on building economic prosperity and most people focused on the present with little concern for the future: life became easier and more enjoyable. Unfortunately, this age of prosperity, complete independence, self-reliance and opportunity quickly became an age of downfall: in order to pursue this utopia, people were asked to work harder. In consequence they could not prosper themselves but only endured.

Fitzgerald condemns this American society of the 1920s that has lost its pursuit of progress for happiness to finally become purely materialistic and corrupt.

In this essay, I will deal with the road from the Midwest to New York City and the road from West Egg to East Egg both exemplifying the decay of the American Dream, personified by the characters of Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway, as there is a strong relationship in the novel between the geography of the roads and the characters’ social values. On the one hand is the journey of Nick Carraway coming from the Midwest and going to New York City where he discovers corruption and immorality. On the other hand we find the road Jay Gatsby is following to be accepted among the wealthiest and to be loved by Daisy. This road, from West Egg to East Egg, represents the movement from solemnity and honesty to obsession of class and privilege.

I wish to show that these two roads epitomize the decay of the American Dream: through two main characters of the novel and in two different ways that we will discover in this essay, the two roads or journeys that are followed by these two characters start from a point of moral prosperity to move them towards a state of moral decay: Gatsby more profoundly than the Nick. This essay will be twofold: the first part will concern the road from West Egg to East Egg that Jay Gatsby follows while the second part will deal with the road of Nick Carraway: the road from the Midwest to New York City.

Not the gem I'd hoped for

I have been trying to read this book for many months. I've taken it on a good few airline flights and read all of it one way or another. But it's been a struggle. Because of the title I know I should love it. However, despite the author's well-meaning efforts, it failed to excite me.

Maybe the stupid cover illustrations got our relationship off on the wrong foot. (The back cover is similar to the front but with the cans on strings coming out of computer screens.) I realise the author may have had no say in this, but surely someone associated with the publication has heard Bill Quirke's little ditty that "information travels over wires but communication happens between the ears". Anyhow, screaming the strategy into a one way channel is not the way to go.

It's not that there is anything particularly "wrong" about the book. New practitioners may well find it helpful. It wanders around a vast number of aspects of internal communication and discusses each reasonably thoroughly in a paperback of 10 chapters over 179 pages. Lots of it is common sense, much is interesting, and there is the odd gem. The best part by far is a detailed five page table covering the features, advantages and disadvantages of various channels.

In short, it's not the wonderful guidebook to communication strategy I had anticipated. My suggestion is to have a careful look at the contents before you buy. It is well set out with subheadings, lists, tables and diagrams though. If you are interested in learning all about communicating strategy the guru is Lester Potter. His "The Communication Plan: The Heart of Strategic Communication" (Third edition, USD159 from IABC) may be a better bet.

Thank you, Phil, for giving us what no one else has to date - practical, no nonesense techniques and guidance for turning strategy in action. We all know that execution is the hard part, and this book is all about this challenging aspect. It includes other vital information on key topics such as change management and the essentials of interpersonal communication, brining the reader an up to date synthesis of the latest thinking. A must read, because you won't find such thorough information anywhere else.

Another BS Real Estate guru promoting his site?....

It only takes a few seconds for you to realize that the author is affiliated with the site www.biggerpockets.com . Oh great another real estate investing guru who just so happens to funnel you into his site! But what happens when you get to the site? What services do you have to pay for to get real estate investing Information? The same thing that happens as you continue to read the book, you star to say Wow This is great information! This is better then most of the top books on real estate investing, actually explaining "how" to get started and actually steps of action to take. As I read and explored the site I realized this book is amazing and the author knows what he is talking about and actually wants to help instead of asking me to sign up for a week long crash course on making millions of dollars in real estate. Does the author say it's easy to become rich over night? No he doesn't! He shows how any average person can get involved in rental property investments. This book is one of the most comprehensive books on the topic. I would recommend this book to people who actually want to learn and get into real estate investing. This is one of the few books that is not only a good introduction but also has a ton of information for seasoned real estate investors as well. I was truly amazed and to think I almost skipped over this book because I thought it was one of those real estate scams! Great book with great information.

Great Insights & Easy Read!

I can't speak for how this book will be perceived by experienced real estate investors, but I know that for myself, as someone with relatively little prior knowledge of the business, this book was extremely informative. After giving a lot of general information about real estate investing, the book takes you through the entire real estate investing process in pretty good detail, from analyzing deals, to submitting offers, to obtaining financing, and eventually to how to manage your properties after the purchase. This is just a great read with tons of information, presented in an easy-to-understand way. If you're new to rental property investing, you will absolutely learn plenty by reading this book, and because of the somewhat "chronological" layout of the book with regards to the investing process, it makes it easy to go back and find particular information quickly. So this will make a great reference tool even after you've read it.

Nothing more than common sense

Here is my opinion - and that's just it, it's an opinion, and it's personal, and you don't have to agree with it.
I don't mean to be harsh, but I *think* this is a pretty much useless book written by the next guru trying to sell you something and market his website.
There are no statistics, no scientific data, no analysis.. just random stories like "I was sitting at a Chinese restaurant, I opened my fortune cookie, and it told me that I'm meant for greater things so I decided to invest in real estate."
I'm sorry, but if you're going to suggest people throw all their life savings into one basket, you should maybe give them some hard facts.
What's the percentage of people that fail in the rental property business?

I did not find exact and precise answers to any one of these questions.
Instead I was reading about a guy who had loads of luck and managed to build his rental property empire.
Good for you! And the advice that you give is useful but it's also nothing more than common sense.

I am leaving this bad review because I am very disappointed.
I was expecting a lot more in terms of data, analysis, and exact steps towards a practical solution. Instead I got a lot of general bla-bla-bla with with a few anecdotes.
A piece of free advice from me - if you're going to invest in property, do your own research and don't think it's as easy and as glamorous as some people might make it sound.

I found The Supernatural Life to be a great encouragement to my faith and an enjoyable read. In this very engaging book, Cindy Jacobs shares her testimony of Holy Spirit baptism and talks frankly about receiving and learning to walk in faith in many of the spiritual gifts God has given her. This is a great read for those who have had an encounter with the Holy Spirit and want continued encouragement or for those with an open heart and mind who want to learn more about the power of God and the supernatural life.

The Supernatural Life: Experience the Power of God in Your Everyday Life by Cindy Jacobs

If you want to see God move in and thru you, this book can be an encouragement. It covers her experimenting God in her bathroom where no one would know...sounds like a lot of us: "If I do that, someone might see and think I'm crazy!" God meets you where you are, as long as your heart is in the right place.

It talks about miracles from health, to food and oil multipling; in our day. It also talks about praying and nothing happens, but don't give up. It shares about God giving directions and then people follow those directions even if it seems impossible and takes 9 months to figure out what the directions were talking about.

I helps me to be excited about Gods things, and to practice on myself, if I'm the only one around :-) ! And for me, just because I can't figure it out right away, it doesn't mean I should think God was not in it. Food for my thoughts and possibly yours.

Once again Sis and prophtess Cindy Jacobs has done it again and again by the help and inspiration of the HOLY SPIRIT. As soon as I finished reading this book and also the book of Acts I was posioned by one of the devil's agents and I refused to get help but rather trusted the Lord to heal me and He did. Over the past decade a transformation has been underway in the world of wine, as wineries have become just as much places to visit as sites of wine production. In order to showcase their domains and attract and accommodate visitors on winery tours, wineries have engaged renowned architects to extend existing wineries as well as build new ones. This has led to arresting spaces being produced for wine in a whole plethora of styles. Wine by Design highlights some of the most exciting new wineries and spaces for wine, including those by such acclaimed architects as Frank Gehry, Herzog & de Meuron and Santiago Calatrava.

This new edition of Wine by Design adds a further nine wineries to those in the original book, so that it now features a total of almost 40 wineries from around the world. New projects are drawn from Austria, Canada, Italy, Portugal, Spain and the USA and are by such well-known architects as Alvaro Siza and Renzo Piano. About the Author
Loraine Fowlow is Interim Dean and an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary. She is an award-winning academic author, whose writings on the subject of (in)authentic environment have been published internationally. She is also on the editorial board of the University of Calgary Press, and was recently invited to be part of the centennial edition of Canadian ‘Who’s Who’ (University of Toronto Press, 2010). Professor Fowlow is a regular contributor to Canadian Architect magazine.

Sean Stanwick is an associate at Farrow Partnership Architects Inc and a partner at CreativeWorks Consulting in Toronto, Canada. He co-authored the first edition of Wine by Design as well as Design City Toronto, both published by John Wiley & Sons.

A great pairing of Wine & Architecture

I bought this as a Christmas gift for one of my many wine loving friends and just had to get one for myself. It tackles a unique subject - winery architecture - and gives you a good but not too in depth description of the wine making region, the wine facilities, and the wines themselves. It is full of great colour photography, site plans, and a broad selection of wineries around the world. The architecture featured is modern and not what you expect of typical wineries...the Gehry sketches alone are worth the price of the book! Want to impress your friends? Leave this book out on your coffee table. Better yet, pull this book out and enjoy while you sip on a Rioja red.

Superbly written true crime

It's been many, many years since I've stayed up all night to finish a book, but this one did it for me.
Ann Rule is in top form in this book; her writing is quite well done, unlike many in the true crime genre. The book flows, and while no stone is left unturned, one doesn't feel exhausted and distracted by detail.
At first, I wasn't interested in purchasing this book, believing that since the case received a lot of national publicity and was so recent, I'd know beforehand what I'd read. But I was utterly wrong.
This is really Ann Rule's best book yet, and one of the best books I've ever read in true crime.

Detailed and insightful!

During the time covered in this book I worked as a federal law enforcement officer with an office at the Byrne Courthouse at 6th & Market Streets in Philadelphia, PA. I worked with most of the agencies mentioned by the author and I found the book gave me even more information than I already knew. The author really painted a portrait that makes one want to empathize even more with the Fahey family and her once hoped-to-be husband Mike. What a great piece of research and writing.

Deeply Nuanced Reporting

I am a burned-out former paralegal from Wilmington, Delaware. I knew Thomas Capano and Anne Marie Fahey. I followed the trial closely, and I have read all four true crime books based on this case. Even though Ms. Rule is not a local reporter, her understanding of Wilmington's unique political and social climate is much deeper and more nuanced than any of the other authors'. I strongly recommend this book, which is both a clear-eyed study of this case and a real pleasure to read -- fast-moving and yet deeply felt.
