This was a life altering book for me

I starting reading this book thinking I was not in denial, but I wanted to see what it had to say. I did the exercises even if I didn't see the point. Well I found out although I had not blanked out any memories, I had repainted some seemingly small details that made a huge difference when I saw them for what they are. This book has helped me to start working on things that I really didn't know were a problem, and it has brought significant change into my life.

For the first time I can remember in my 38 years, I have a sense of peace and I am starting to feel comfortable in my own skin, which is something I didn't think was possible. I still have a long way to go on the road I am on, but before this book I didn't even know the road was there.

This book takes you through the steps to dig into what things have caused you pain and see them for what they are. Then it gives you the steps to overcome the limits you placed on yourself due to what you have uncovered. This is not a feel good cover up, this is the real thing that will help deep within yourself. It isn't always easy, but it is absolutely worth it.

Edit July 2012 to say: Dr. Ablow seems to have aligned himself with a political side since this book came out and that may scare some people off. I didn't want that to stop anyone from getting this book, because I really think it can help so many people. This book came out when he was politically neutral so there is nothing political in it, and it is still great at helping someone uncover what hurt them and the behaviours that are not in their own best interests.

I wrote my first review on the book about 5 years ago and after reading it I am reminded how far I have come. I really thought I was pretty much together when I picked up this book. I have an interest in Psychology, so I was reading it for that mostly. Sure I had an awful childhood, but who didn't. I had mostly sorted that out long ago. What's one little abandonment issue when you are in a good marriage? It's nothing! Well I found out I was wrong after I started working through this book! I had a lot more going on than I thought. The changes for me have been mostly internal. I let go of a lot of anger I didn't even know I had, and I did a lot of forgiving, something I was never good at. It's a process to this day, I still have issues with self esteem, that is such a complex issue for me...but I feel so much better than I did before. When you are working through Living the Truth, you have to be honest with yourself and be willing to write out past events when you were hurt by someone.

I will say it again after all these years... This is not an easy book to work through, it is not a quick fix, feel good quick, fade away fast answer. This will actually help you make your life better, it isn't going to be easy, you have to do the exercises but if you do, it will pay off.

Dr. Keith Ablow's tome, "Living the Truth," isn't just another self-help book. It breaks new ground, offers new assumptions, and for many of those who will read it and listen to its voice, there is hope for a better future. The truth can often be a terrible weapon of aggression. Ablow's book, with the center of his thinking bound to the idea that no one has a perfect life, that you must face your conflicts head on, that everyone living on this earth is experiencing one form of pain or another, is a guide to gaining insight in the understanding that gaining insight puts us on the road to where we want to be. Everything about Ablow's own experience as a vulnerable human being has contributed to his belief about life. He isn't the psychiatrist as God or Nitzche. He lives the truth as he has come to know it, as he believes others might benefit from it. He shows you the way. Ablow's premises are free of politics and cheap philosophy. He goes to the center, to the pain we feel, to the regrets that hound us, to the inadequacies we try to hide. Ablow is the ultimate psychiatrist. He is the ultimate humanist. Living the Truth can be a road map to a life without pain. It won't be a road map to a perfect life because there is no such thing as a perfect life.Ablow helps us to come as close as we can to mastering our psychic existence in this vexing thing we call our lives.

Perfect for the FJ Enthusiast

I can remember the first time I saw a Toyota FJ40 as a child. It was love at first sight. I was so excited when I saw the concept FJ Cruiser in 2003.

When the FJ Cruiser was released in 2006, I was quick to get one. It was everything I dreamed of and more.

This book is a great history of the FJ Cruiser and the modern SUV in general. There are so many things that I learned about this truck, and other vehicles like the Jeep, and Land Rover. This details the FJ since its birth during the Korean War to modern day.

One of my favorite areas of the book, is how they detail the design process for the modern FJ Cruiser. While the FJ Cruiser is cool on its own, some of the design ideas that didn't make it just completely WOW you.

This book is the perfect gift for an FJ Cruiser or FJ40 owner. Or just a great way to learn about a historic vehicle. (Toyota wouldn't be the company it is today if it weren't for the FJ)

I am currently working on JSR168 (java portlets) it has helped in some ways. Still doesn't have a good enough description for setting up your environment. If you are looking for a book with examples and some explanation its not a bad book to check out.

A mock up of a book on portlets...

The Java portlet API is one of the less known and actively studied by developers due to the absence of a stable, well documented reference implementation. So a good book on the subjct would be sorely needed but this text is not up to the challenge. It is written by a couple geeks with clearly no inclination or talent for teaching who manage to express even the simplest concept in complicated ways. That maybe could be forgiven, but they also do not seem to have a really deep understanding of the subject. For all but the most general notions and , especially important, for all the configuration , intallation and deployment nuisances you are left on your own. We need a good book covering IN DETAIL pluto and especially Jetspeed 2. Don't waste you money with this mock up of a book, wait for a better title.

Solid intro to portals

Portals are becoming more popular as companies are looking for a single web-based entry point into their various applications. Java provides a standard portal model with JSR 168. This book is a thorough introduction into JSR 168 that will help get portal developers up to speed into this relatively new specification.

The book starts with an excellent introduction into developing portlets. The first seven chapters cover all the details of developing portlets. Response and request objects are covered in detail. The portlet life cycle is clearly explained. Deployment descriptors are discussed. Integrating with Servlets and JSPs is described. The remainder of the book covers more advanced topics. Anyone working with a portal knows the problems with providing single sign-on to multiple applications. The authors discuss this issue giving several examples. The authors cover syndication, searching, personalization, web services, content management, and more.

My only complaint with the book is that it uses the Apache Pluto portal, which is not in final release yet. Pluto is an open source portal but it is complicated to distribute content to it (you are forced to use Maven). When the book explains how to distribute portlets to Pluto it gets a little confusing because the authors need to explain multiple configuration files, some of which are exclusive to Pluto. Other than this one problem, the book gives a solid introduction to developing a portal providing detailed information of both the basics and many advanced concepts. Clearly the authors understand portal development and know how to pass that information on to their readers.

A must have for emergency and critical care veterinary practitioners

We see a lot of emergency cases and a presentation by Dr. Lisciandro opened my eyes to the utility of ultrasound in learning so much more about one's critically ill cases. There is a place for focused ultrasound, and focusing on organ systems, one at a time, is also a good way to improve one's skill set in ultrasound. I use this text a lot in my day-to-day practice.

A MUST HAVE FOR ALL VETERINARIANS!!!

A must have for any veterinarian. I bought this book to learn ultrasound and after reading the first two chapters I was confidently using an ultrasound machine. Since buying the book, I use an ultrasound machine all the time and have diagnosed free abdominal fluid, splenic masses, pyloric antral masses, and bladder sediment. A great book and a serious must have!

Excellent resource for any veterinarian who has recently begun the long learning curve towards integrating ultrasound into their practice. Very clear, straightforward and practical. Good pictures with thorough explanations (however some pictures are a little dark). I would strongly recommend this book to general practitioners or emergency veterinarians.

Transforming self image through Motivation to Happiness/Success

Takumi Yamazaki is a best selling author in his home country, Japan. Reading and absorbing SHIFT: 13 EXERCISES TO MAKE YOU WHO YOU WANT TO BE suggests that very soon he will be a best selling author in the United States as well. His style of writing is spare, delicate, warm, and supportive. And unlike many other motivational writers he is grounded in creating solid psychological information about human behavior and turns that information into a mirror that allows the reader to read, observe, reflect and change - with complete ease.

Yamazaki opens with a Prologue that defines self image - how we arrive at the way we perceive the world and our position in it. He then dives in an explores how self image is created, referencing the the conscious, the subconscious, and the unconscious. Then he guides us through the paths of 'shifting' our self image by explaining homeostasis (status quo) and scotoma (blind spots) as the markers that we have the ability to alter in deciding to become who we would like to be. The message is of course more complex than a sentence summary, but the reason Yamazaki succeeds is that he emphasizes how to understand our motivations and how to use those in a restructured way to convince ourselves that change is possible through our own work, our own decisions, our own facilities. 'You can create a new reality for yourself from this very moment. You can reset your life and move it in the direction you want....life is not the continuation of the past, it is the connection to the future. You can choose to change the direction it's going.'

He discusses our needs: physiological, safety, love, esteem, and self-actualization and suggests the following equation: 'scale of your desire + the desire itself = willpower.' To achieve this he recommends 'having a meeting with yourself every day' - a time to rewrite dreams and motivations and discover possibilities/probabilities. 'What you think happens. You make your own reality. When you think good thoughts, good things happen. When you write things down on paper they are more likely to happen.' Beyond these bits of simple sage advice the author provides examples of 'shifts' and exercises to perform alone or with friends. The motivation we each need to effect change can sometimes be difficult to find. In this self-help book, Takumi Yamazaki provides thirteen exercises and seventeen techniques aimed at enabling you to obtain, retain or maintain the motivation you need in order to change (shift) your self-image so that you can become the person you want to be.
So, how does Takumi Yamazaki address the issue of motivation, and what insights does he offer? He begins by discussing perception and the roles of the conscious, subconscious, and unconscious in the way in which we see the world. Takumi Yamazaki discusses the status quo (homeostasis) and blind spots (scotoma) and how to recognise and overcome the limitations that both can impose on your desire (and capacity) to change.

`Live as though you already have what you want. Until it happens, just live as though it already has.'

Having identified barriers to successful change, Takumi Yamazaki provides thirteen exercises (some of which you need two or more people for), and seventeen techniques for increasing your perseverance.

The book is easy to read, and contains some good information and useful techniques for effecting change. Not all suggestions will appeal to for everyone, but I think that the real key is to consider the suggestions made and explore the possibilities that appeal at a personal level.

`All the answers are within you.'

For me, the best part of the book is within the seventeen techniques included to assist with perseverance. Many of these techniques could assist those who are seeking to increase their self-confidence. It isn't possible for an individual to completely follow each of the exercises in the book: some of the exercises require two or more people. This may be a drawback for some readers who prefer to work alone.

I read the book in one long sitting, did the 13 exercises, and was motivated to get up, make a phone call, and start a project I had been thinking about, but wavering on.

I like this sentence: Make your dream happen. A book worthwhile having.
