Perfect for the FJ Enthusiast

I can remember the first time I saw a Toyota FJ40 as a child. It was love at first sight. I was so excited when I saw the concept FJ Cruiser in 2003.

When the FJ Cruiser was released in 2006, I was quick to get one. It was everything I dreamed of and more.

This book is a great history of the FJ Cruiser and the modern SUV in general. There are so many things that I learned about this truck, and other vehicles like the Jeep, and Land Rover. This details the FJ since its birth during the Korean War to modern day.

One of my favorite areas of the book, is how they detail the design process for the modern FJ Cruiser. While the FJ Cruiser is cool on its own, some of the design ideas that didn't make it just completely WOW you.

This book is the perfect gift for an FJ Cruiser or FJ40 owner. Or just a great way to learn about a historic vehicle. (Toyota wouldn't be the company it is today if it weren't for the FJ)

I am currently working on JSR168 (java portlets) it has helped in some ways. Still doesn't have a good enough description for setting up your environment. If you are looking for a book with examples and some explanation its not a bad book to check out.

A mock up of a book on portlets...

The Java portlet API is one of the less known and actively studied by developers due to the absence of a stable, well documented reference implementation. So a good book on the subjct would be sorely needed but this text is not up to the challenge. It is written by a couple geeks with clearly no inclination or talent for teaching who manage to express even the simplest concept in complicated ways. That maybe could be forgiven, but they also do not seem to have a really deep understanding of the subject. For all but the most general notions and , especially important, for all the configuration , intallation and deployment nuisances you are left on your own. We need a good book covering IN DETAIL pluto and especially Jetspeed 2. Don't waste you money with this mock up of a book, wait for a better title.

Solid intro to portals

Portals are becoming more popular as companies are looking for a single web-based entry point into their various applications. Java provides a standard portal model with JSR 168. This book is a thorough introduction into JSR 168 that will help get portal developers up to speed into this relatively new specification.

The book starts with an excellent introduction into developing portlets. The first seven chapters cover all the details of developing portlets. Response and request objects are covered in detail. The portlet life cycle is clearly explained. Deployment descriptors are discussed. Integrating with Servlets and JSPs is described. The remainder of the book covers more advanced topics. Anyone working with a portal knows the problems with providing single sign-on to multiple applications. The authors discuss this issue giving several examples. The authors cover syndication, searching, personalization, web services, content management, and more.

My only complaint with the book is that it uses the Apache Pluto portal, which is not in final release yet. Pluto is an open source portal but it is complicated to distribute content to it (you are forced to use Maven). When the book explains how to distribute portlets to Pluto it gets a little confusing because the authors need to explain multiple configuration files, some of which are exclusive to Pluto. Other than this one problem, the book gives a solid introduction to developing a portal providing detailed information of both the basics and many advanced concepts. Clearly the authors understand portal development and know how to pass that information on to their readers.

A must have for emergency and critical care veterinary practitioners

We see a lot of emergency cases and a presentation by Dr. Lisciandro opened my eyes to the utility of ultrasound in learning so much more about one's critically ill cases. There is a place for focused ultrasound, and focusing on organ systems, one at a time, is also a good way to improve one's skill set in ultrasound. I use this text a lot in my day-to-day practice.

A MUST HAVE FOR ALL VETERINARIANS!!!

A must have for any veterinarian. I bought this book to learn ultrasound and after reading the first two chapters I was confidently using an ultrasound machine. Since buying the book, I use an ultrasound machine all the time and have diagnosed free abdominal fluid, splenic masses, pyloric antral masses, and bladder sediment. A great book and a serious must have!

Excellent resource for any veterinarian who has recently begun the long learning curve towards integrating ultrasound into their practice. Very clear, straightforward and practical. Good pictures with thorough explanations (however some pictures are a little dark). I would strongly recommend this book to general practitioners or emergency veterinarians.

Transforming self image through Motivation to Happiness/Success

Takumi Yamazaki is a best selling author in his home country, Japan. Reading and absorbing SHIFT: 13 EXERCISES TO MAKE YOU WHO YOU WANT TO BE suggests that very soon he will be a best selling author in the United States as well. His style of writing is spare, delicate, warm, and supportive. And unlike many other motivational writers he is grounded in creating solid psychological information about human behavior and turns that information into a mirror that allows the reader to read, observe, reflect and change - with complete ease.

Yamazaki opens with a Prologue that defines self image - how we arrive at the way we perceive the world and our position in it. He then dives in an explores how self image is created, referencing the the conscious, the subconscious, and the unconscious. Then he guides us through the paths of 'shifting' our self image by explaining homeostasis (status quo) and scotoma (blind spots) as the markers that we have the ability to alter in deciding to become who we would like to be. The message is of course more complex than a sentence summary, but the reason Yamazaki succeeds is that he emphasizes how to understand our motivations and how to use those in a restructured way to convince ourselves that change is possible through our own work, our own decisions, our own facilities. 'You can create a new reality for yourself from this very moment. You can reset your life and move it in the direction you want....life is not the continuation of the past, it is the connection to the future. You can choose to change the direction it's going.'

He discusses our needs: physiological, safety, love, esteem, and self-actualization and suggests the following equation: 'scale of your desire + the desire itself = willpower.' To achieve this he recommends 'having a meeting with yourself every day' - a time to rewrite dreams and motivations and discover possibilities/probabilities. 'What you think happens. You make your own reality. When you think good thoughts, good things happen. When you write things down on paper they are more likely to happen.' Beyond these bits of simple sage advice the author provides examples of 'shifts' and exercises to perform alone or with friends. The motivation we each need to effect change can sometimes be difficult to find. In this self-help book, Takumi Yamazaki provides thirteen exercises and seventeen techniques aimed at enabling you to obtain, retain or maintain the motivation you need in order to change (shift) your self-image so that you can become the person you want to be.
So, how does Takumi Yamazaki address the issue of motivation, and what insights does he offer? He begins by discussing perception and the roles of the conscious, subconscious, and unconscious in the way in which we see the world. Takumi Yamazaki discusses the status quo (homeostasis) and blind spots (scotoma) and how to recognise and overcome the limitations that both can impose on your desire (and capacity) to change.

`Live as though you already have what you want. Until it happens, just live as though it already has.'

Having identified barriers to successful change, Takumi Yamazaki provides thirteen exercises (some of which you need two or more people for), and seventeen techniques for increasing your perseverance.

The book is easy to read, and contains some good information and useful techniques for effecting change. Not all suggestions will appeal to for everyone, but I think that the real key is to consider the suggestions made and explore the possibilities that appeal at a personal level.

`All the answers are within you.'

For me, the best part of the book is within the seventeen techniques included to assist with perseverance. Many of these techniques could assist those who are seeking to increase their self-confidence. It isn't possible for an individual to completely follow each of the exercises in the book: some of the exercises require two or more people. This may be a drawback for some readers who prefer to work alone.

A very good book with an insight of the live of Ian Douglas Smith.
His dry sense of humour, his early life in Seluwke,a small mining town in Rhodesia.
His life as a farmer and his family, Janet and his 2 adopted children and their own son.
The book reads like someone tells a story and difficult to put down.
I met Ian Smith and the author Phillippa Berlyn.
Both interesting people.

Short but to the point

As an Armenian it pains me how little I know about my peoples history.
Anything and everything I have ever learned was from Sunday school.

As an adult, anytime I have tried searching the history of Armenia, all I find is information about the Genocide.

Enigma of the Armenian Alphabet was refreshing and encouraging.
It's eye opening to think my people are responsible for greatness.

The book is easy to read and understand (well written). The charts and presented graphs help get the point across.

I'm looking forward to the next book.
I wish there was a kindle version so I could see some of the graphs in a bigger text.

love love love this

Its been a couple of weeks since my last fix..... I was pleased to get straight on it!

Loved this installment, felt like I was catching up with old friends.

Clementine and Ward, London seems to go well, even meeting Ward's family.

Uh Oh poor Slade and Trinity, they do seem to be in a tough place, I hope they can either move on or work things out. Heartbreaking.

Skye and Carson, although piggy in the middle are really pulling out all the stops in helping their friends with their grief. Its not fair that they are only managing to snatch a few moments together.

Conrad and Beatrice, still not going well! she is upset, I get that but she really is a selfish, self-centered cow, She feels Conrad betrayed her, but she is having a really hard time coming to terms with his decision to see her father. We all knew it would come and bite him in the ass but I didn't think to this extent.

I loved how Mike is being really sympathetic with both his children, whey they both need him.

Seems Silke and Pike are doing OK, well until he shares his feelings, I can't help but think their time is limited, don't think Pike helped ease er mind and heart.

Thomas and Rome, come over as a great couple, and its quite one sided, I wonder how long Rome can g on pretending, not only to herself but to Thomas too. Great to see Theo's not giving up on having a friendship with his brother.

Arsen really has done a great job, turning his life around, and is doing a grand job. His meeting with Lydia was very one sided and very cold, and Abby's words blew me away.

Clementine and Ward, I’ll admit at first I was wary about these two but I’m warming up to them, they are not as bad as I initially thought they would be. Ward is slowly growing on me but I still reserve judgment because I feel like he’s too good to be true. I hope Clementine doesn’t get hurt throughout all this. Ooh meeting the family, that will either end in disaster or it’ll be good, I won’t tell you which one but let’s say it was memorable.

Slade; for a clever guy, you can be really dense sometimes. It is hard to see why after falling and being truly in love with Trinity, why he wouldn’t want to progress their relationship naturally and commit to a life with her. I can see both sides of the argument, I truly hope that these two can find a way to be happy with each other. That is my hope, not sure if it’ll happen though.

Arsen, he’s making strides into being a better person and I love how much he’s trying, he’s not giving and I’m slowly thinking he will get his happy ending somewhere down the line. He has to or it will all be for nothing; I don’t want that to happen. There has to be a positive end goal aka getting Silke back into his life.

Cayson and Skye feel like they can’t help Slade or Trinity because they’re on the opposite side in terms of knowing what they want, and making sure they stay together and happy. I’m so glad I fell in love with this series, I can’t help but get emotionally invested with these characters, there is something special about it. You will get so addicted to these characters, I swear you will.

Whip out the tissues....

Trinity and Slade call in quits. Trinity doesnt know what she wants. Well..she knows she eants to get married to Slade, but he doesnt. Then she tells him to change his mind after she pressures him to. Once he does change his mind, thats not good enough for her because its forced..because she forced him!!! Ughhh they annoy me

Silke is not really over Arsen!! Yay! He is finally making it on him own, mey his daughter. Bow the only thing left isnto get Silke back. That will be interesting.

Clementine is falling for Ward..and falling hard. They are cute together but you know s***s about the hit fan like usual.

Thomas and Rome are getting hot and heavy, but something is up and still bo answers!!!

This series is a big addiction and i love it

excellant practice tool

If you are an English Second Language student from a Latin country, you need this. No matter your learning rate, this will greatly improve your vocabulary. It won't help your accent, but there are great choices on CDs for that purpose. This is a way to build your word store fairly painlessly.

Too advanced

I thought this book would be good, but the words are way too advanced for a beginning English-language
learner. You have to introduce simpler vocabulary in a very basic format. The words are also too
difficult for them to pronounce. They are not presented clearly, just in long lists with no application in
dialogue or clear setting.
I will not be able to use it.

Like I said, the ESL students like this text and seem to enjoy learning from it with their teachers. It's is like level One not really a foundation text. Perhaps another level before this would be good for those who speak zero English.

A landmark of 20th century literature.

Joseph Campbell was one of the great souls of our age. I've read this book twice, first on my own and the second for a class in "Myth, Religion & the Mythic Imagination." I read the paperack to tatters, literally, marking each illuminating, exhilirating insight. "Dry"? "Not a fun read"? What book did YOU read? Campbell is unlike other writers on myth; he looks not at an entire myth but at its parts. By the end of the book, he has essentially created the Ultimate Hero Myth, which takes bits of every hero myth from virtually every culture (heavy on Native Americans). Campbell was not a dispassionate academic--this was his gospel, and he lived by it. This book is alive and inspiring like no other book I know. One unique aspect of it at the time it was published was its approach to Christianity. For Campbell, Christ's life had to be seen as a myth. Before him, most Western scholars wouldn't have dare to say such a thing. Others had written on that, but in a skeptical manner. Campbell's view is that the Virgin Birth, miracles, Resurrection, etc have meaning only because they ARE myths. Look, there'd be no "Star Wars" without this. No "Sandman" comics from Neil Gaiman. No "Watership Down." This book is for the intellectual who wants to LIVE, not just to sit sterile at the desk. Recommended like mad.

A Book with a capital "B."

First of all, I feel inadequate and unworthy to review this book, but since Amazon has given me the chance, all I can say is that this is one of the greatest Books (with a capital "B") of my experience. I suspect that it shall be recognised as one of the single greatest products to come out of 20th century American letters.

No, I'm not setting Campbell up as a prophet or anything like that, indeed, I suspect that this book's greatness lies in the eternal truths that transcend Campbell's individual personality. He just managed to tap into them- thank God.

The entire book deals with the hero's journey. This is the Monomyth shared by all cultures- and indeed seems to be a direct inspiration from the cosmos itself by way of the collective unconscious. Here we have the eternal cycle of 1) the call to adventure; 2) the crossing of the threshold; 3) the tests, trials, and helpers; 4) the sacred marriage, apotheosis (becoming one with god), or elixir theft; 5)the flight 6) recrossing/ressurection; and 7) the return to society with hard won gifts. He examines all of these elements in depth with a wealth of cross-cultural examples. The first half of the book deals with this cycle on a more individual and personal level (the microcosm), while the second half deals with the greater cosmogonic importance (the macrocosm.)

Now, the really amazing part of all this is that virtually all of it comes across as meaningful, interesting, and totally nonacademic. That's why academic types hate Campbell, and his mentor Jung,- they know that Campbell's and Jung's works will endure and be read a thousand years from now, while their own monographs will be justly forgotten. There are a lot of mediocre Ph.D's out there that can never forget that Campbell never bothered to get a doctorate, because he considered such degrees to be a worthless and meaningless waste of time....

I've read this particular edition three times now- it is well designed and manufactured and has resonable sized print. I've also listened to the entire audio version at least twice- it is well edited and it is very difficult to figure out where exactly it is abridged.

A New Hope...

Joseph Campbell is a "love him or hate him" type of guy. The other reviews of his works that I have found on Amazon bear this out. The criticisms seem to be that his examples do not bear out his theories, that he relies on Freudian and Jungian psychology as "proof", and that people do not agree with his world-view. My response is this: we must bear in mind that Joseph Campbell was, above all things, a pioneer. A pioneer need not get everything right the first time out - he is setting up a new paradigm with which to view the world. Freud did not get everything right when he fathered modern psychoanalysis, but he created a new framework and steered it in the direction it needed to go.
The Hero with a Thousand Faces is a comparative study of the religions and myths of the world. Its central theme is that all of their stories are essentially the same. They follow certain archetypal paths that are different in particular circumstances, but in general, follow the same overall arch. Now, this is not 100% true as even he admits - stories get changed around a bit and different things happen, but to the extent that he makes his point, the similarities are astonishing. His conclusion - or ONE possible interpretation - is that this reflects certain archetypal themes that are in every society's collective subconscious (Jung) and that these myths represent eternal truths about life...how to look at it and how to live it.
Now, as to the criticism that his examples don't bear out his theories, Campbell states that he is just choosing an example or two to illustrate his point. The purpose of this book is not to be a comprehensive collection of the world's myths - that book is The Golden Bough. Campbell selects myths that the average reader may not be familiar with. While sometimes similarities may not be immediately apparent, it is open to disagreement as any essay on literature is. Campbell warns though that these myths must be ready as poetry, not prose - so beware of any callow analysis. Personally, I would have like his using more familiar myths - especially Arthurian legends - to illustrate his point.
As for his seeming to rely on Freud and Jung as gospel, that is a bit dated. Even so, the fact that his theories do jibe with Jungian psychology is significant - if not actual "proof" that he's right. And as for disagreements with his world-view, that is irrelevant. Campbell has developed a framework with which to view the world; you do not have to draw the same conclusions from it that he does. Campbell did not believe in a personal God, and I believe he is wrong about that. But the underlying message to me is that, even though people may have divergent beliefs about religion, the underlying ideas and values of religion ARE DEMONSTRATABLY TRUE.
Campbell goes through each stage of the hero's journey, with all its variations. This is meant not only as academia but it is for YOU - the READER. This is how one views one's own life. These ancient stories were not just for entertainment - they showed us how to live. That's what this book is for.
